Official Synopsis: The Skull teams up horror legends Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in a chilling, supernatural tale of murder from beyond the grave. Based on a short story by Robert Bloch (Psycho), The Skull introduces us to Dr. Christopher Maitland (Cushing), a collector of the occult. When he is given the opportunity to purchase one of the infamous Marquis de Sade, he leaps at the chance. What he doesn't know is that his friend, Matthew Phillips (Lee) is the former owner of the skull - and quite happy to be rid of it. Possession of The Skull leads to a terrifying series of nightmarish events for Dr. Maitland as he tries to keep control of his life, the forces of unspeakable evil bear down upon him. Our Take: I couldn’t have been more off base with my expectation for The Skull. The DVD case did nothing but to dispel my doubts for this film. The cover art is dumb and the case made of such a cheap, smelly plastic that I figured if the studio doesn’t care about this movie, then why should I? I went into this film thinking it was going to be some silly, low-budget, British horror flick. I came out of it with the knowledge that this is actually a well-crafted film in both story and style.
I should have expected slightly more knowing that the two leads of the film were Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, but it wasn’t until the credits came up and I saw that the film was based on a Robert Bloch short story that things began to click. Robert Bloch is best known in the horror genre and best known in general for writing the book, Psycho. That right there gives the man a fair amount of street cred.
There are no special features included on this disc.
There is plenty of lore and evils planted throughout The Skull, the least of which is actually the titular skull itself. I’m going to give a semi-recommended here because I’ve been reading online that a lot of the DVD’s have been fritzing out on the viewers halfway through watching it. And I tend to believe that based on how cheaply made this DVD is.
SEMI-RECOMMENDED!
