Our Take:
I’m a huge fan of everything Sonic. I grew up with his cartoon, have loved all the video games and every once and awhile I’ll even catch an episode of Sonic X. So, I have to wonder how it is that I had never even heard of Sonic Underground until this Volume 2 popped up on my desk.

Naturally, I got really excited when I realized that there was some untapped Sonic ‘toons for my viewing pleasure. So, the next question was would it live up to what I wanted it to be? It turned out to be a little bit of yes and no.

There is a HUGE amount of dumb stuff thrown into this show. It’s basically about Sonic and his brother and sister (who are lame as characters and in idea) who are “rockers” and rebels and on the lookout for their long lost mother. The whole music element of this show, which is basically the sole reason it was created, fails. It’s all awful music and all the segments involving the characters playing instruments that are also weapons border on painful to watch.

The upside of this show is that if you close your eyes and ears during the music sequences, the stories are all top notch. Despite Sonic Underground not having Tails in it (which disappointed me greatly) and despite myself missing the first 20 episodes (as this set collects the latter 20 episodes) I was still easily encapsulated in the encompassing story and really, really dug it by the end of it all.

The only special features included on this DVD set are all music-related. All the musical segments from the show itself are collected in its own special feature that you can play as a music video function. This is something I highly recommend against doing. And then, the fourth disc of the volume is a collection of songs compiled onto a CD, so stay away from that too.

I can’t flat out recommend Sonic Underground: Volume 2 over the other Sonic The Hedgehog series’ but I think, given the chance, this show can be appreciated by viewers new and old alike.
