Lela Baker Wirick, age 103, of Jonesville, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2009, at Country Living Adult Foster Care in Hillsdale. She was born November 5, 1905 in Waldron to Elmer & Nellie (Ely) Shaffer. She was married June 23, 1928 to Glenwood Baker who preceded her in death in 1973. She married Leon Wirick in 1983, he preceded her in death in 1993.
Lela started her working career as a linotype operator and later became publisher of newspapers in Waldron, Jonesville and Litchfield. During WWII she was a U.S. Army Ordinance Inspector working in Hillsdale County, inspecting plants in Hillsdale, Reading, Jonesville and Litchfield that were producing war materials. Lela's biggest lifetime memory was having the opportunity of meeting and shaking the hand of General Douglas MacArthur after his return from duty in the Philippines. Lela donated blood to the American Red Cross for over 40 years. She was a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church and the church choir. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, a charter member and one of the founders of the Hillsdale County Art Guild and she was a member of the Investigators Club.
Survivors include two sons, Gary (Donna Sue) Baker of Jonesville and Gene (Alice) Baker of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; step daughter-in-law, Mary Wirick of Port Huron; grandchildren, Lindsay Baker of Memphis, TN., Janet (Randy) Marsh of Litchfield, Robert "Mark" (Mary) Baker of Jackson, Gene Jr. (Valorie) Baker of Florida, Gregory "Greg" Baker of Wappingers Falls, NY and Amy (Tony) Nardone of Wappingers Falls, NY; step- grandson, Scott Wirick of Port Huron; and 6 great granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and step-son, Frances Wirick.
There will be a celebration of the life of Lela Baker Wirick on Saturday, November 14, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jonesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for visitation Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of memorial services at the church.
