Under One Roof: Working to Keep Siblings Together
County-based Workshop Spring 2009
One of the most critical issues in foster care is preserving a child’s connections with his/her brothers and sisters. In this workshop, we are going to examine some of the most relevant issues connected with siblings in care.
We will look at the definition of siblings, the importance of the sibling bond, the benefits of placing siblings together, the barriers to their placement and NJ Child Welfare policy and practice related to sibling placement. We will also look at sibling issues within the foster or adoptive family such as tips for running a large household with several children, handling conflict among siblings, and dealing with a parentified child. Finally, we will discuss what the resource parent can do for a child placed away from his/her siblings to maintain connection, including the arrangement of visitations with other resource parents and alternative methods of contact.
