PAFCOM holds Grand Marshal’s Night, March 11

Jersey City, NEW JERSEY --- The Philippine-American Friendship Committee, Inc. will hold its Grand Marshal’s Night honoring Domingo R. Hornilla, Jr. who was selected as the 2006 Grand Marshal.

The event will be held at the Marriott Liberty International Airport Hotel, Newark, New Jersey on March 11, 2006, Saturday, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight.

The net proceeds from this affair will help finance the forthcoming Grand Parade and Festival on June 25, 2006, in Jersey City. Invited are various community leaders in the tri-state area, local, county and state government officials, Philippine Consulate officials, Consul General Cecilia B. Rebong and Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Lauro Baja.

The over-all Chairperson of PAFCOM 2006 is Araceli P. Miralles.

The chairwoman for the Grand Marshal’s Night Committee is Seny S. Lipat.

The Vice-Chairmen for the Grand Marshal’s Night are Arthur A. Acosta and Gerry M. Austria.

Domingo “Jun” Hornilla, Jr., a long-time resident of Jersey City, has been active in the Filipino community for more than three decades. He had served the Garden State Filipino-American Association, Inc. (GSFAA) as President for twelve years (six terms).

He is instrumental in having the first “Mr. & Mrs. Philippines, USA pageant sponsored by the Garden State Filipino American Association, Inc. In 1978, Jun organized the ever-popular Filipino-American Bowling League in Jersey City, of which he was and still is, the President.

Being comptroller of the famed Lincoln Center in New York City, Hornilla was project director of the critically acclaimed First Filipino Film Festival at Lincoln Center in 1998. It was co-presented by the Philippine Centennial Commission, the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Philippine Consulate General in New York.

Jun undertook again the Second Filipino Film Festival at Lincoln Center in summer 2000, presented in collaboration with the Philippine Independence Day Committee (New York), the Film Society and the Philippine Consulate General in New York.

Jun is the first Filipino appointed in Jersey City to serve in the city government. He was appointed and served as member of the Advisory Council of the Department of Human Resources from 1977 to 1981 under then Mayor Paul Jordan and the late Mayor Thomas FX Smith.

He was appointed Commissioner of Jersey City Human Rights Commission in 1982. He has served under eight different city mayors and is still serving in the same capacity up to the present time under Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy.

He was inducted in the “1999 International Who’s Who of Professionals (USA), and also awarded as 2002 “Outstanding Filipino-American in Community Service” presented by the Filipino Heritage Committee, New Jersey, to name a few.

Filipino dentist gives kids something to smile about!

Bergenfield, NEW JERSEY --- Filipino dentist Dr. Mariliza LaCap and her Vietnamese husband Dr. Darren Tong from Washington Dental Associates will provide a one-day free preventive and emergency dental care for children ages 12 and under on February 3.


The free dental clinic, called Give Kids A Smile (GKAS), is part of National Children’s Dental Health Month (CDHM). The one- day program is also part of the American Dental Association’s (ADA) annual push to bring the number one childhood disease, tooth decay, to the public’s attention.


“Giving back to the community that has supported our office is so important,” says Dr. Tong. “This program will touch the lives of so many of New Jersey’s children who need oral healthcare and instruction. I am proud to be part of it.” he said.

Children who come to Dr. Tong and LaCap’s office on Wednesday will receive a comprehensive dental exam, any emergency treatment, oral healthcare instruction, fluoride treatment and free dental hygiene materials including toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste.

Last February, more than one million children in the United States received more that $100 million in dental care at more than 5,000 sites nationwide as a result of the GKAS event.

Dr. Tong, Dr. LaCap and their dental team donated over $7,000 in free dentistry to economically disadvantaged children in the Bergen County area.

This February, 16 public sites will provide treatment across New Jersey in addition to several private offices, like Dr. Tong’s and LaCap’s.

Dr. Tong and Dr. Lacap have been performing dentistry for over 16 years in New Jersey.

Tagalog classes at Philippine Center

NEW YORK --- Are you planning a trip to the Philippines and wanting to brush up on your Tagalog? Are you Filipino or interested in learning more about the Filipino language and culture? Then consider taking a course in Conversational Tagalog, an introductory class on the Philippine national language.

Beginning on January 31st, the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) will offer a 12-week Conversational Tagalog course at the Philippine Center in Manhattan, NY. The class will meet once a week on Tuesday nights, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Registration is $450/adults and $350/students, with valid student ID. Enrollment is limited and applicants are encouraged to sign up early. Payments are accepted by check and credit card payment (through PayPal).

The course will provide college students, recent graduates, and young professionals lessons on conversational Tagalog, covering the basic rules of grammar, verbs, and common vocabulary. In addition, there will be discussions on the history, culture, and business practices of Filipinos.

Classes will meet at the Philippine Center located at 556 Fifth Avenue (between 45th and 46th streets).
