Fil Am youth hold nat’l meet in Seattle

Seattle, WASHINGTON --- Filipino American youth from all over the United States gathered over the weekend, amid the uncertainties in the country brought about by President Arroyo’s declaration of the state of emergency.

The declaration was one of the many issues discussed during the second annual Filipino American SanDiwa Conference held in this city.

The conference, with its theme “Can You Read the Secrets of History in My Face?” in honor of Filipino immigrant writer Carlos Bulosan, was organized by the national Fil-Am youth organization SanDiwa.

SanDiwa, a relatively new national Filipino-American youth organization, has chapters in various major US cities.

It was founded by the alumni of the Philippine Studies Program (PSP) of the University of the Philippines and the New York City-based Philippine Forum.

SanDiwa’s goals and slogan is to “educate, advocate, and celebrate” issues facing Filipino communities both here in the United States and abroad.

The conference keynote speaker, Dr. Epifanio San Juan, stated that the conference “accomplished something extremely valuable when you look at it from the vantage point of the future. It is the beginning of something new and I hope what has begun grows and develops further because SanDiwa as a national organization is extremely necessary if we are to change the situation of Filipinos here in this country.”

Professor Delia Aguilar from the University of Connecticut, who gave the opening speech for the conference, said she was heartened by the conference.

“ I am very hopeful that more and more young people like those in SanDiwa will develop a political consciousness that will be a source of pride and inspiration for Filipinos everywhere.”

During the conference, members of SanDiwa passed several important resolutions.

SanDiwa members agreed to “educate” Filipino Americans about the current state of emergency and the possibility of the return of martial law in the Philippines.

The organization will “advocate” nationwide for immigration reform, specifically to oppose to the pending anti-immigration bill (HR 4437).Finally, SanDiwa members will “celebrate” next year’s conference in California’s Bay Area during the President’s Day Weekend.

Fil Am press group urges end to emergency

Chicago, ILLINOIS --- TheNational Press Club-Phil. USA urged Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to end Proclamation No. 1017, “which is detrimental and damaging the truth that the current situation in the Philippines does not call of a State of National Emergency.”

In a two-page resolution passed by the board during its regular monthly meeting on the last Saturday of every month (Feb. 25th), the Chicago-based Filipino American press organization, which has members from across the United States, said that President Arroyo should “not resort to measures that undermine freedom, especially freedom of the press.”

By implementing, Proclamation No. 1017, the group said the President created “a public impression that newspapers, newsmen and citizens are being denied freedom of expression and other civil right and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution of the Philippines.”

On Feb. 24, President Arroyo declared the Philippines under a State of National Emergency based on Proclamation No. 1017.

Pinay wins Audi A4 at Rockwell Mall

EVERYONE wanted it –the most luxurious prize of the season, a 2006 Audi A4.

From those who dropped a few raffle stubs to those who entered in the hundreds, all waited with baited breath as Power Plant VP for Retail, JP Masakayan, together with PGA Cars, Inc President, Miguel G. Coyuito, drew the winning entry.

And the keys went to Mykholyn Narvaez of Sacramento California.

What a way to drive the year! And all because of a simple shopping trip to Rockwell’s Power Plant Mall last January 11 when our lucky balikbayan made a handful of purchases at the mall’s Lacoste store.

Mykolyn was beside herself with disbelief when informed of her amazing fortune. And with good reason: she was in Hong Kong on her way back to the US!

What a fashionable start to 2006 as Rockwell, the address of fashionable Manila, and PGA Cars transformed a traditional holiday raffle into the sensational retail event it had become.

“Literally, this is just the start!” as AVP-General Manager, Malou Pineda promises a slew of exciting events to reward loyal Power Plant shoppers.
