THE MPG Keyboard Artists and Friends, Inc. will present the students of Marilou Padilla-Gallardo Piano/Organ/Keyboard Studio in a gala evening 13th annual keyboard extravaganza, “An Evening of Piano Music 2006” on June 17, at 7:00 pm at the John Addison Concert Hall, Harmony Hall Regional Center.
The Addison Concert Hall is located at 1070 Livingston Road, Fort Washington, MD.

This concert’s theme is ‘It’s Grammy Awards Night”, highlighting music from the movies, jazz, rhythm and blues selections as well as music from yesteryears to top hits of today to be performed by twenty five pianists of the studio. This upcoming event will be hosted by Mike and Cathy Caroll and overall stage and technical direction will be handled by Jack Saraza.
On June 24, meanwhile, the students of the Marilou Padilla-Gallardo Piano/Organ Keyboard Studio will perform in a matinee piano performance “ A Morning Musicale 2006” at the St. Columbia Church at 11:30 am.
Reception will follow shortly at St. Columba’s Father Dewan Hall. There will be 48 performers showcased in the performance. Call the studio at (301)567-7973 for more information and reservations.
Mrs. Gallardo, owner of the music studio with 98 students featured in these upcoming keyboard concerts is also the founder of the MPG Keyboard Artists and Friends, Inc., a non-profit organization sponsoring cultural and concert events in the community as well as these upcoming concerts.
Mrs. Gallardo is the recipient of the 2003 Jordan Kitt Memorial Grant selected by the Maryland State Music Teachers Association, as an awardee in teacher enrichment and student development. She is an active member of the Maryland State Music Teacher Association, Music Teachers National Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers and the Prince George’s Music Teachers Association.

NEW YORK --- The Philippine-New York Junior Chamber’s (JAYCEES) Outstanding Young New Yorker (OYNY) candidate Ruben Rafaelov won first prize at the New York State Junior Chamber competition for High School Seniors held on April 22 in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Ruben Rafaelov, a senior from Thomas Edison Vocational School (Jamaica, Queens) won first prize of $1,500.
He is currently ranked number 1 in his high school senior class and will pursue a degree in pharmacy at St. John’s University (Queens, NY) this fall. He is a National Honor Society Inductee and is the recipient of the Stars and Stripes Forever award and the Prudential Spirit Award Certificate of Merit. His extracurricular and community activities include Walk America, Global Citizen Corp of Net Aid, Student Council and the founder and president of his school’s Global Outreach Club.
The Philippine-New York Jaycees held its local competition on March 18 in New York City. The other three winners were Sherina Giler (Richard R. Green School of Teaching), Kimberly Gibson (Brooklyn College Academy) and Belizta Rodriguez (Long Island City High School).
The competition was judged by Msgr. Oscar Aquino, Pacita F. Ros and Marin Dekom (Long Island Junior Chamber). The local competition’s sponsors included Dr. Ben and Mrs. Lou Ileto, Joe Ramos, Dr. Baby Bleza, Roger Alama and United Home Care. Donors also included various Jaycee members and other Filipino-American community leaders.
The Philippine-New York Jaycees is a local chapter of the Junior Chamber International.

CAMBRIDGE, Masssachussetts --- A team of Filipino graduate students and alumni of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have reached the Final 5 of the annual MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition’s development track for their business: CentroMigrante, Inc.
The members of the Philippine Team are Illac Diaz (team leader) , Niel Ruiz, Artessa Saldivar-Sali, Tina LaForteza and Chester Yu.
This in the first time ever in the history of the business plan competition that any Filipino or a team of Filipinos have reached the finals in this international competition.
The Final awards ceremony where the winner will be announced will be on Thursday, May 18 at 7:00 pm in Kresge Auditorium at MIT
The team made it to the Final 5 out of a field of about 165 team entries in the highly competitive competition.
The team’s business proposal is for the building of a transient homes for seafarers in the Philippines. “As many as one million Filipinos a year spend up to six months away from their home provinces, looking for jobs as seafarers in Manila’s port areas with most of them living in shanties under depressed and undignified living conditions,” the team said in its proposal.
“CentroMigrante provides a unique solution to this problem with a self-help business model that provides clean, safe and affordable urban housing for such indigent, transient job seekers,” it added.
The team said it has tested the market through its pilot shelter in Manila that has shown profitability during the past two years.
