Celeste Legaspi to be feted at Philippine Fiesta

LEGENDARY Filipina vocalist and stage thespian Celeste Legaspi will be making a highly anticipated US appearance at the Philippine Fiesta in America 2006.

She will be joined onstage by the Philippine entertainment industry’s most recent line of new blood: TV sensations Judy Ann Santos, Diether Ocampo, and Ryan Agoncillo, and the “Telenovela Diva” herself, singer Faith Cuneta.

Celeste Legaspi is one of the most accomplished artists in this country.

Her original Pilipino music (OPM) songs are Filipino classic songs at its best. Coming to mind quickly are Ang Abaniko, Showboat, Tales of the Manuvu, Saranggola ni Pepe, Limang Dipang Tao, Celeste (the TV show), Mamang Sorbetero, Paglipas ng Dilim.

She is one of the prime movers of Original Pilipino Music. Together with Girlie Rodis and Ryan Cayabyab, she formed Musical Theater Philippines (MTP) which eventually became Musicat, a theater production outfit that staged Alikabok at the Teatro Aguinaldo, Camp Aguinaldo in 2003.

Alikabok is inspired by the famous painting of Juan Luna, The La Bulaqueña, a portrait of a beautiful young girl, in quiet tones of blue and white, her hands folded on her lap, her eyes large and eternally sad. Celeste will be honored for her contribution to Philippine music at the Philippine Fiesta on August 19 and 20 at the Meadowland Exposition, Secaucus, New Jersey.

Organized by New York-based company, Special Edition Press, Inc.,(SEP) the event is now on its eighth year and is the largest indoor gathering of Filipino Americans on the east coast with an average attendance of 20,000 for the 2-day event.

It offers an avenue for exhibitors from the Philippines and the United States to promote and sell their products and services. This years sponsors are Citibank, DirectTV, Western Union, Pizza Hut, EvaAir, South Forbes, Cathay Land, Inc., Coca Cola, 3M & Sons, Inc, Brittany Corp., My World, Mama Sitas & Tancinco Law Offices.

Pinoy scientists abroad asked to serve home

NEW YORK CITY -- The Philippine Consulate General in New York announced recently that the Balik Scientist Program (BSP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is still accepting applications under the short-term category for 2006.

For those who are not familiar with the Balik Scientist Program, the program aims to accelerate the scientific, agro-industrial and economic development of the country by inviting science and technology experts who are Filipinos, or foreigners of Filipino descent, to share their expertise back home.

A “Balik Scientist” is, a science and technology expert who is a Filipino citizen or a foreigner of Filipino descent, residing abroad and contracted by the Philippine government to return and work in the Philippines. Short-term experts are entitled to stay in the country for a period of at least one (1) month or a maximum of three (3) months. The BSP will shoulder the expert’s roundtrip airfare up to P150,000.00 and daily subsistence allowance of US$150/day, which is fairly high by Philippine standards.

Deputy Consul General Melita Sta. Maria-Thomeczek said, “We know the monetary reward under the Balik Scientist Program cannot compare with what our Filipino scientists and experts are probably receiving in the United States; our appeal then is geared more towards their sense of nationalism or patriotism and to the emotional high they will certainly derive knowing that they have helped accelerate the economic development of their motherland.”

BSP is specifically looking for experts for the following priority industries: Biotechnology, ICT, Pharmaceuticals, Environment, Packaging R&D, and Housing and Construction.

Interested applicants may download an application form and check the candidates’ qualifications and other requirements from the BSP website at www.dost.gov.ph/bsp. All applications and requirements of applicants shall be sent to:

The Balik Scientist Program, Department of Science and Technology, Gen. Santos Avenue, Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines, P.O. Box 3596 Manila, Philippines; or through Fax No. (632) 837-0086.
