NEW YORK CITY —Diverse City Theater Company (“DCT”) announced the roster of original plays it commissioned for its Equality Plays Festival.

Nominated by several Disney employees, DCT’s Equality Plays Festival is the recipient of Disney Foundation’s “Cast Community Fund” award.

Among those selected was a play written by a Filipino.

Jorshinelle Taleon-Sonza’s Cold Flesh is about a recently ‘outed’ gay Filipino doctor dealing with the arrival of his wife from the Philippines.

The Festival will also present three original one-act plays:

Robert Askins’ absurdist Clean Living, an exploration of truth and men in the military where men can neither “ask nor tell;”

Joe Byers’ Veils, about an American soldier in a war-torn Middle-Eastern country and his first sexual encounter with a local woman; and

Stuart Harris’ Onna Field about a gay high school boy and his sports coach;

All four plays were commissioned by DCT as part of its annual mission to develop plays that revolve around one diversity issue of cultural significance.

Filipino Victor Lirio, DCT’s chief artistic and producing officer, stated that “although DCT uses the theater as a venue for examining social issues, the festival’s primary goal remains presenting character-driven plays that dramatize the human experience.

Rock in the Box: The Fil-Am compilation album launch

ACCORDING to the Smithsonian Institute, Filipino-Americans constitute the second largest Asian-American group in the United States. In recognition of this fact, the Institute declared 2006 as the Filipino-American Centennial Celebration year, in commemoration of the first batch of Filipino overseas workers that landed in Hawaii in 1906.

While major organizations are gearing up for major festivities, Filipino-Americans involved in the music scene have gathered to be a part of this historic year. These artists came up with an equally important contribution this year’s celebration–a compilation album called Rock in the Box.

Released by an independent Fil-Am label – Soulworks Records, Rock in the Box consists of 14 all-original songs by Fil-Am bands and solo artists, who have made their marks in the Filipino-American music landscape.

The process of selecting the songs that would make up the album took six months, beginning in October of 2005 up to March of 2006. Of the hundreds of materials sent for consideration, only the 14-songs made the final cut.

The album includes:
