Conference to tackle Fil Am youth issues

NEW YORK CITY — This Fall, immigrant and US-born Filipino youth will hold a consultation in New York City to deepen their understanding of the barriers faced by Filipino American youth.

Through the consultation, “Pasulong: Our Stories Must Be Told, Our Future Must Be Forged”, the youth also aim to create a plan of action to address their needs, issues and rights.

The consultation is organized by Ugnayan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, a local grassroots Filipino youth organization.

“Pasulong” will take place the weekend of November 10-12, 2006.

“We understand that the lack of employment opportunities and deteriorating quality of life in the Philippines directly cause the massive outmigration of our people, who seek jobs and a better future outside the Philippines,” said Leah Obias, an Ugnayan organizer. “We also know that immigrants struggle with low wages, discrimination, and systemic racism.”

“Filipino youth who are either immigrants themselves or children of immigrants feel the effects in many ways, but there is a real lack of understanding about how we are affected and why we are in this situation in the first place. As youth, we need to ask questions and take ownership of our struggles for our future and the future of our community,” she said.

Three thousand Filipinos leave the Philippines every day, and many settle in New York and New Jersey. After Mexicans and Chinese, Filipinos are the second-largest migrant population to the US, and three-fourths of Filipinos in New York City arrived in the last 20 years, according to Census 2000 data. The numbers increase when including undocumented Filipino workers, who face the most barriers to education and employment.
