Verzosa named one of TOFA awardees

NEW YORK CITY -- The Philippine Forum, together with the American Coalition of Filipino Veterans (ACFV) and The General Douglas McArthur American Legion Post 1920 will hold a townhall meeting to generate support for the family reunification efforts of Filipino World War II veterans.

With Congress stalled on the immigration reform debate, a proposal granting priority to adult children of Filipino World War II veterans may also be put on hold.

The Townhall Meeting will be held at the Kalayaan Hall at the Philippine Forum office, 54-05 Seabury Street, Elmhurst, NY 11373 (Trains V/G/R to Grand Avenue), on September 10, at 2:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.

The Senate comprehensive immigration reform bill Senate Bill 2611 contains an amendment introduced by Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) that would facilitate the reunification of naturalized WW II veterans in the US with their children from the Philippines.

This amendment was unanimously approved by the Senate. The House of Representatives, on the other hand, has a similar bill, H.R. 901, introduced by Rep. Edward Case (D-HI).

With the ruling GOP still fractured over the issue of legalizing some 11 million undocumented immigrants, some proposals that could benefit the Filipino community such as the immigration priority to WW II vets’ families may be at risk.

“We need to see what we can do to keep the family reunification proposal for WW II vets alive in light of the troubled immigration reform efforts.” said Robert Roy, executive director of the Philippine Forum. “Many of our veterans are in their mid-80s. The least we can do is take up the fight for them.”Roy said.

“This family reunification proposal for our WW II vets is long overdue,” said Julia Camagong, Philippine Forum co-executive director.

“The least we can do for our WW II heroes is to work to have their family by their side at this point in their lives,” she added.
