ARE you planning a trip to the Philippines and wanting to brush up on your Tagalog? Are you Filipino or interested in learning more about the Filipino language and culture? Then consider taking a course in Conversational Tagalog, an introductory class on the Philippine national language.
The Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) will offer once again its 12-week course on Conversational Tagalog Level I beginning in January 2007.
Classes will meet at the Philippine American Center located at 185- 4 Hillside Avenue, Jamaica, Queens, NY.
Registration is $450.00/adults and $350.00/students with valid student ID.
Enrollment is limited to 10 students per class so applicants are requested to sign up early. Registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.
Deadline for registration is on December 22, 2006.
The course covers the basic rules of grammar, verbs, and the common vocabulary to get you by everyday situations in the Philippines.
There are also discussions on the history, culture, and business practices of Filipinos.

FILIPINA Mia Herbosa is currently showing her self-portrait ‘Life in a Still Life’ at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park.
This is the third year in a row her work has been accepted into the prestigious Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. This is their 110th Annual Juried Exhibition and it will run from October 5-27, 2006. For Gallery hours please call 212 475-3424.
The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club is one of the oldest professional women’s art club in the country, and was founded in 1896 in honor of Ms. Wolfe one of the country’s first art collectors and the only woman among the 106 founders of the Metropolitan Museum Art. Today, its members are in the Who’s Who series in American Art, represented in museums, art collections around the world.
Mia Herbosa has exhibited in the US , Italy, Japan, Hongkong, the Philippines since 1995. Her work is in the collections of New York Public Library, and the City of the Museum of New York, as well as in many private collections. She has given oil seminars in Manila. Her 9th major solo exhibition, will be held in Manila at Alliance Francaise this December 2006 as well as an oil seminar in the same month at L’ Arch En Ciel Gallery in Alabang.

FILIPINOS in New York City can avail of free or low cost health tests for various aliments every Tuesday for the whole month of October.
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) is inviting all New Yorkers to participate in its Take Care New York campaign this October to get low or no-cost health tests for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma, HIV, cancer, and other diseases that can be easily treated, managed or prevented.
HHC’s Take Care New York campaign will offer low or no cost health screenings for children and adults at dozens of locations throughout the city every Tuesday in October – Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 – and will feature information and education on disease prevention and affordable health insurance.
The screenings are available to all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. New Yorkers can dial 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/hhc to find out the nearest screening location.
“Too many New Yorkers have life-threatening diseases and don’t know it,” said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. “A simple health test could prevent thousands of illnesses and disabilities this year and ultimately save lives.”
HHC’s Take Care New York campaign is an extensive public awareness health outreach effort with events at all HHC hospitals, diagnostic and treatment centers, local clinics and other community based sites.
Public hospital and clinic staff will work with individuals without health insurance to connect them to any plan they may qualify for through HHC’s charity care program, HHC Options.
The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) is the largest municipal healthcare system in the country.
HHC serves 1.3 million New Yorkers annually, including more than 450,000 who have no health insurance.
