GunGear - Ruger Grip Information

SELECTING THE RIGHT AJAX GRIPS FOR YOUR S/A RUGER

1. The Ruger "OLD MODEL XR3 GRIPFRAME" was used on the original 3 screw guns manufactured from 1953 until June 1962. This is considered by Ruger to be the smallest of the three standard gripframes and utilizes the Ajax Style #26 grips.

2. The Ruger "RED" (ALONG WITH VARIOUS OTHER LETTERS) GRIPFRAME" was used between late June 1962-2004 on the Blackhawk, Vaquero, Single-Six, Old Army (and Super Blackhawks with the 4 1/2 to 6 1/2" barrel lengths). It is considered by Ruger to be the largest of the three standard gripframes and it utilizes the Ajax Style #31 grips.

3. The Ruger "NEW MODEL XR3 GRIPFRAME" now in production starting January 2005, is considered by Ruger to be the mid-size of the three standard gripframes and includes the new action locking feature. It is used on the 50th Anniversary Blackhawk (serial number prefix 520) and the New Model Vaquero (serial number prefix 510). It also fits the New Model Single Six from 2005 to present. This newest grip style utilizes the Ajax Style #25 grips.

4. The Ruger "BISLEY AND BIRDSHEAD GRIPFRAMES" continue the same as they have in the past and utilize the Ajax style #33 grips for the Birdshead gripframes and the Ajax style #28 for the Bisley gripframes.

5. The Ruger "SUPER BLACKHAWK GRIPFRAME" for the 7 1/2" to 10" barrel lengths has a square back trigger guard and continues to utilize the Ajax style #30 Grips. The other Super Blackhawk guns with shorter barrels and round back trigger guard take the Ajax style #31 Grips described above in item #2.

6. The Ruger "BEARCAT GRIPFRAME" is for the ultra-small frame .22 Caliber Bearcat guns and continues as in the past using the Ajax Style #27 Grips.
