AUGUST NEWSLETTER "My Horse Never Does That!"
|
|
Dear Horse lovers,
June & July have been filled with exciting first for me, and next month there will be even more. I have recently received reports from several students who have experienced awesome firsts with their horses as well. The progress I am witnessing from people who are dedicated to keeping it natural is both encouraging and rewarding.
Here are some of my firsts. Did you have any this summer?
· The first time riding at a Ray Hunt clinic
· The first city trailer driving by myself, remember I’m a country girl.
· The first clinic at Chance Ridge Event Center in Elkhorn
· The first demonstration by a “Heart in Your Hand Dream Team”
· The first time it took me more than ½ hour to get a horse in a trailer
· The first time Cisco didn’t stay ground tied and ran off in a huge pasture
· A first equine psychology class away from home
· The first youth camps at the Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell
· The first weekend of 20 private lessons in the Omaha /Lincoln area
· The first trail ride for Sorry, who is working on being my next demo horse
· The first e-mail question from a frustrated horse lover in another country
· The first Equine Assisted Growth & Learning Training in August at Salt Lake City
· The first booking for inspirational/educational speaking engagement
Remember every time you have a first with your horse it is an opportunity for growth & learning. So many times I hear people say “My horse has never done that before!” or “He never does that at home.” My first thought is, “So what?” It doesn’t upset or worry me when my horse does something unexpected. Instead I find it quite interesting, and I put on my “OH BOY, hat”.
Which means I have to start using horse logic instead of people logic. The new situation gives me an opportunity to learn from my horse and reminds me to think more like a horse when in "horseville".
Horses don’t separate how they feel from how they act. They will tell you exactly where they’re at and what they want from you. Every moment with them they’re taking your measure with accuracy because their survival depends on it. Horses are thinking, feeling beings with a gift of reading their surroundings, which includes linking to the true emotions of the humans they encounter. They react positively to “authenticity” and negatively to behavior that "isn’t authentic”. I’ve always known you can’t fool a horse into thinking you aren’t afraid when you are. But I’ve never thought about the horse’s ability to read all sorts of thoughts and emotions. I am finding out they mirror our life’s frustrations as well as our strengths.
Bottom line is, you can’t fake it with your horse. You will confuse them and frustrate yourself if you do. I am certain now that horses are stellar judges of character. With their talent for reflecting our emotions back to us horses can present an interesting puzzle for us to solve about ourselves. Their sensitivity can fuel flashes of insight about us.
Often times your horse understand you better than you understand yourself. Working with horses can cultivate what’s best or worst in you. The choice is yours. They can change your attitude to the world around you. However, you must be
open-minded and allow the horse to show you how to communicate with the same depth of transparency they have. If you do, those firsts won’t seem so frustrating they will become fascinating opportunities for growth and learning.
The next time you hear yourself saying, “My horse has never done that before”, just say to yourself “OH BOY, here we go, a new adventure on this amazing journey we call horsemanship.” Then try to relax, take a deep breath, put your thinking cap on, and solve the puzzles presented to you with horse logic instead of people logic. Allow your horse to teach you, don’t blame him for the situation, and instead look at the person in the mirror. Don’t fake it, give yourself a break, and enjoy the process.
You’ll look back one day with appreciation at all the first that have molded you into a better horseman or woman.
Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis
EXCITING SUMMER NEWS!
EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS!
I am giving some discounts to those students who have attended more than one of my classes or sign up with a deposit at least a month early. I also give away a free classes to a host who gets at least 6 other people signed up and attending a class. Call for more specific details.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are available either the day before or after clinic, or in the evening after the day of a clinic. I also travel to an area for a few days to give private lessons.
You must register for a private lesson in advance. (Two-hour minimum)
I recently gave 20 private lessons over four days in the Omaha/Lincoln area. I spent a lot of hours on the road and drove over 600 miles, but had a tremendous amount of fun with each lesson. Each lesson was different and I was able to help each person achieve a few firsts with their horses, plus clear up some existing issues.
One of the main issues several people had was with desensitizing or despooking their horses. I helped horses enjoy their fly spray, pick up their feet without resistance, become familiar and friendly to the scary blue tarp, ropes or the carrot stick. These horses had convinced their owners that they didn’t like these things, when in fact the owners didn’t have the proper tools to help the horses overcome their fears.
Other issues I covered during these private lessons were; dullness, how to loosen up the feet to move with more freedom, getting more exuberance and play from a horse, leading with safety and respect, stick to me game, catching game, backing to cure biting, hind the hinny for a kicking horse, change of direction on circle and transitions, leads, side-pass, pivots, going through gates both on ground and while riding.
Many of the people were new students, and they commented that a couple of hours weren’t enough to accomplish all they needed and wanted. A two or three day clinic is definitely a better value for each dollar as it is much cheaper per hour. There is way too much information to cover in a couple of hours. Even those who had attended a clinic before who had specific problems to work out discovered how fast the two hours went.
I know the need for consistent follow up with lessons in order for steady progression to occur. I am going to provide this service by establishing a home base where I can give lessons from in Omaha and Lincoln. I will be rotating on a 6-week schedule so you have plenty of time to practice in between sessions.
Having a place for students to come will give us more time and we won’t have to worry about weather. I am looking at heated facilities to work from, so that we can continue through winter for those fanatics like me who want to play year round.
I will try to remain as flexible as possible with scheduling, you will need to make arrangements in advance for your time slot and keep your lesson time or trade with someone once you have reserved a certain time.
MORE SPECIFIC DETAILS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE SOON!
WOMEN'S CONFIDENT LEADERSHIP CAMPS
The Women’s Confident Leadership Camp at the Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell, NE on Oct. 6-9 is full. However, there is a waiting list in case of a cancellation, and there will be more of these Camps to come in 2007. In fact I am going to schedule several of them. So if you are interested at all it would be best if you let me know as soon as possible that you would like to attend one and what month would be best for you. Specific dates will be announced soon.
YOUTH CAMPS
For the rest of this summer and fall you can call to arrange your own personal dates for an individual or family camp.
Dates for 2007 camps will be announced soon, so start planning for next year.
I have lowered the age limit, as many people who expressed interest had children in the 8-10 year old range and I didn’t have much interest from the older teens as of yet, but they are still welcome. There is still time before school starts for one last trip. Please sign up as soon as possible.
We had three of these camps so far and they were a real hit. In fact after three days some students wanted more and we extended the camp an extra day. After experiencing the camp with a small number of participants I have decided to keep the camps small for the kids. I like being able to help each child and their horse individually. I am only accepting 4-5 kids and one or two adult sponsors. The cabins at Calamus Outfitters sleep six with comfort. However, we may have to get two cabins or the lodge if we end up with girls and boys. So far I have had all girls and their Moms.
The camps were both fun and exhausting. We not only did lots of trail riding, and played ground games with obstacles; we also swam in the lake plus ate plenty of S’mores and good food. We saw cattle, deer, grouse, sand turtles, and coyotes on our trail rides, plus lots of wild flowers and cactus. The girls had a chance to ride their horses and Cisco bareback. One girl even rode her 14-month-old paint for the first time bareback and at a trot. It was a wonderful experience for everyone.
FAMILY VACATION AT CALAMUS OUTFITTERS RANCH
Rent a cabin $75/night for two people $100/night for 4 people. Sleeps six maximum.
Includes a kitchen (microwave & frig), bathroom (shower only, no tub), air-conditioning, picnic table, and grill. Two bunk beds (one double, one single)
Stall is $10 a night. Bring your own hay.
Horses must be current on all vaccinations.
Private Instruction is $25/hour at the ranch.
Lower group rates per hour, or a package deal per day.
Call to arrange your special package deal for a small group.
Lease one of my horses $25 a day.
Miles of trail riding, fishing, boating, canoeing, tanking, swimming, etc.
Lodge is available to lease for larger groups. 10 people $300 a night.
There are also camper RV hookups close to the Calamus Lake.
There is a small house available to rent for a very reasonable price per day especially for a family. However the house is in town about 15 miles from the ranch, but only 2 miles from me.
If you are interested in any of the above ideas please let me know, as the cabins do book up quickly especially in the summer time.
This opportunity is available all year because I also have access to an indoor arena; however, it is about 20 miles to the facility.
There is a rental fee of $12 per hour for the indoor arena.
SIOUX CITY
Valley of Dreams Clinic Aug. 5-6. There is still time to sign up!
Report on EQUINE PSYCHOLOGY CLASS, Hickman, NE in July
This was a classroom study of horse psychology and behavior through lecture, discussion, brainstorming, question/answer sessions, stories, and a demonstration with a horse named Cimarron who belonged to our host Cindy Nelson. Cindy served delicious brownies and drinks.
We had lively discussions about herd dynamics and how it effects our relationship with our horse. We discovered how much like a blessed family the herd can be. I think everyone took away some ideas to improve their reltaionship with thier horse. Plus it seemed we all learned how being more like a horses might improve our world a bit.
The demonstration that evening with Cimerron was enlightening even with the heat. I hope that the observers began to see the subtle changes in the horse that I was trying to point out. I stressed how much better result we get when we slow down and let the horse lick and chew more. Cimerron was a willing demonstration horse and I enjoyed playing with him while exlaining the how's and why's of what we were doing.
There is a lady in Springfield who is wanting to host a similar class, so if you have been waiting for something like this in your area, let me know and I'll contact you with the details as they are made available.
REVISITING MANY ARENAS LATE SUMMER AND EARLY FALL.
PRIVATE LESSONS (Also available)
When I am in town at these Clinics, I am giving private lesson to those sign up in advance. (Either day before or after clinic, or in the evening of the clinic dates)
As requested we will be returning to many favorite arenas. These are all quality facilities with friendly owners who are excited to have us back for repeated clinics.
The sooner you sign up the better. I will give a discount to anyone who signs up with a deposit by the early bird deadline. (EBD)

FURTHERING MY EDUCATION
I will be attending Dennis Reis and Eagala seminars this summer to further my education, so there will be some weekends that I am not available. I will be gone August 15-19 & 26-27.
OTHER IDEAS FOR LEARNING
Check out the many classes we teach on the “class descriptions” page. It could even be an equine psychology class in an air-conditioned home with interesting and fun simulations, videos, and role-play activities.
A teaching demonstration is another good idea for a 4-H group or saddle club that is very cost effective.
Here’s another idea, come and spend a few days with me at my place, like a mini intership. Bring a horse or use one or more of mine.
I have a spare bedroom, or for more privacy you could stay in my parents basement or rent a nearby cabin. Call to make individual arrangements.
It would be fun and a great learning experience. I seem to do things much slower at home than in a clinic situation. It is a more realistic environment.
CLINIC REPORTS and BOOK INTERVIEWS
Be sure to check the website regularly as I will be adding clinic reports, new pictures and testimonials that students share with me. Ray Hunt clinic report is now available.
If you have a story about a horse dream that was nearly destroyed or you just want to share your success with the world, let me know. I will be interviewing people this summer for my book.
Thanks for reading and hope to see you on the trail soon!
Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis
