Dear Horse lovers,
January always brings a time of reflection for me as I wade through the piles or receipts trying to figure out my taxes. Each numerical figure I write on the page reminds me about places I've been, the people I have worked with and the things I did throughout the year. With over 16,000 business miles on my car and the opportunity to personally work with over 200 great people eager to learn to be better horsemen it would be hard not to accomplished something. Based on my calculations 2008 was my best year yet despite the high fuel prices, stock market worries, and high unemployment. Both the personal and professional goals I have achieved and those I am still attaining to reach are an important part of my planning for 2009. As a possibility thinker I am setting even high goals for this year despite the doom and gloom stories the new reporters continue to feed us. I have never felt better about who I am, what I am doing, where I am at and the vision I have for the future, which keeps growing.
This month I am one of the guest speakers at Market Place Conference for Small Businesses in NE at North Platte. The topic of my presentation is "Creating a Vision for Your Business". As I am preparing the material I will handout I thought it would be a good time to revisit the vision I have for Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship LLC and then revise it once again.
I have trained horses and given riding lessons on and off all of my life, especially in the summer time while I was a school teacher. This has always been my passion but the vision to make it real didn't happen until 1998 when I went to my first natural horsemanship clinic. I knew from that moment forward that my life with horses would never be the same. This was a turning point in my life. On new years day of 2000 I wrote down a goal on a small piece of paper which was the beginning of actually living my dreams. It said, "I want to be doing something with horses where I can make a living at it by the time I am 50 years old." I quit my job 4 years ago to follow this dream and last year I turned 50 so I not only met the goal I have exceeded it above my expectations.
I believe that most of the success of Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship has been due to the leadership skills I have learned through natural horsemanship principles. Everything the horses teach me I have been applying to both my professional and personal life. Whenever I have a difficulty with a horse my first reaction is to believe it will be possible to resolve the difficulty. Second I start digging to see what the problem really is and how it can be solved. I don't just complain about the symptoms I look deep for the root causes. Third I am determined to use practical progressive steps which slowly build confidence and success. I don't get in a hurry to make it happen, rather I allow it to happen because I set it up for success. Fourth I have the drive to not give up until the work is complete.
The secret to horsemanship is being a true leader and it is the secret ingredient to building a business as well. When leading horses our intention and focus must be clear if we desire the horse to follow our suggestions. A horse will flounder without this clarity and so will a business.
Nobody else can set your dreams for you. However, I challenge you to be a possibility thinker this year. Let faith be the force that sets your goals, guides your decisions, solidifies your commitment, and glues everything together allowing the dreams to become reality.
Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

By request Sherry will be having two Trail Ride Preparation Clinics in January if the weather holds.
Teach your Horse to handle trail obstacles In hand work in the morning Riding in the afternoon
Horses are strong like men but sensitive like women. Learn how to be a sensitive and confident leader your horse will fall in love with. Discover ways to keep your horse's attention, help him be calm and brave, teach him new things, and become a part of you with effective communication.
We took a poll on Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship Yahoo Chat Group to find out what kind of issues most people would like to address at a Trail Ride Preparation clinic and these are the results: Buddy/Barn Sour
Mud or Water Crossings
Dancing, Jigging, Crowhopping, Bucking
Crossing things like: bridges, ditches, logs, etc.
Preventing the horse from eating grass
Riders will recieve a written handout addressing these issues. Observers will learn by watching and listening, but can ask questions at the appropriate times. We will use simulations for most of the above issues because we will be indoors in a controlled environment. When practiced the foundation we give you indoors at this clinic before going out on the trail will transfer nicely to the wide open spaces of a real trail ride so you can be safer and have more fun.
Sat. Feb. 28th at Elkhorn Equestiran Center 9:00-4:00 We will only be accepting 12 riders
The cost is $150/rider, a $75 deposit is required. Auditors are welcome for $30/day. (At Lincoln bring your own chair.)

Internships Last year I had a very successful time with Erica and she came back again this year. We started two colts for her this time, and we were both surprised how fast they came along. She took them both to the alumni women's camp in Oct. and they both rode great even though it was only their 6th or 7th rides. If anyone is interested in this opportunity, call Sherry for more information at 308-346-5663. There will be a new page on our website very soom with more details about this great opportunity. (It is not a salaried internship) Start planning now for a 2009 horse vacation which will give you a new perspective and confidence about your horsemanship which will take you to even more success and fun with your horse.
Horsemanship is a lifetime endeavor. The more we learn and experience the more artistic we can become in our expression of movement with the horse and the happier and more willing the horse will be.
Horse ownership is for fun, recreation and personal growth. Making the right investment to help insure less frustration and more safety will put the joy back into the experience. That is an invaluable gift.
Spending hard earned dollars on riding lesson, a clinic or camp may sound like a self indulgent luxury. But, without coaching on a regular basis, the best professional athletes admit their performances begin to deteriorate. At an amateur level, your investment in riding lessons will create personal joy and yield measurable progress in your goal to become the best rider and horseman you can be. Isn't that what you expect?

Release of New Horse Book by Burwell Author Sherry Jarvis
Sherry grew up in Burwell, NE. She inherited her Dad’s passion for riding horses. Sherry has been in love with horses since she was two years old when her Dad bought her first pony named Ginger. Horses have been an important part of her life as long as she can remember. Through competition in rodeos and horse shows from a young age horses taught her many life lessons. Both success and failure with horses motivated Sherry to dig deeper learning more about how horses think and why they do what they do so she could get better results with them. By learning from her mistakes Sherry has discovered many of the problems people have with horses are misunderstandings because of the difference between the way prey animals and predators think and act. The book “Win Your Horse’s Heart” (Be a Better Horseman) published by Wingspan Press, on-sale March 1, 2009) will not only entertain you but change the way you think about horses. The principles presented in the book about leadership, confidence, relationships, and communication can be transferred to benefit other areas of life even if you don’t own a horse.
WIN YOUR HORSE'S HEART (Be a Better Horseman)is a must-read for those who love horses. This is a "horse" book, but really it is even more than that. It is about building relationships with trust respect and love. It is about self-acceptance, making choices, problem solving, and allowing for compromise. This is an important book about self-discovery of the need for a makeover for the way we think about and interact with horses. There is a way which is better for the horse, because it is approached from the horse's point of view. This book tells stories of life lessons which horses can teach us, and how a good partnership improves our quality of life. But most of all it is about winning a horse's heart in an unselfish way.
There are only two kinds of people: Those who love horses and those who don't. This book is definitely for those who do love horses, whether you own one or not. Sherry's passion and love for horses has driven her to write a book which will change your way of thinking and acting so you can win any horse's heart. When a horse gives you his whole heart he will jump higher, run faster, stop quicker, slide further, spin better, and be safer. There is nothing you can't do together when a horse becomes a part of you. Dreams are sure to come true to those who follow the common sense principles presented in this book, with real life stories to support the practices.
You will learn what it means to be natural with a horse and how to develop a working partnership. You will gain more knowledge and insight about attitudes which can help eliminate frustrations with horses. You will discover practical ways to overcome fears, build confidence, communicate more effectively and become the kind of leader your horse needs you to be. The personal horse stories will touch your heart as you realize that winning a horse's heart is the ultimate prize in horsemanship
For ages the relationship between man and horse has been both positive and negative mainly because there was a need for horses as a work animal. This is truly an amazing time in horse history where horses are now kept more for their beauty and companionship than out of necessity. There are more horse owners today who have a horse for fun than those who make a living with them. Because of this we live in a time when a very few people can make a very big difference for horses everywhere. Sherry hopes to be one of those people who can make a difference by inspiring and motivating others.
Five years ago Sherry quit her school teaching job to follow her passion for teaching horses and people full time. Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship was born because she is dedicated to understanding how horses and humans tick. The business is driven by her vision to guide people and their equine friends into a true partnership where they are able to work and play in harmony together. Sherry wrote “Win Your Horse’s Heart” in hopes that by reading the book horse lovers everywhere will be united toward improving the quality of life for the horse by becoming even better horsemen. By taking a fresh perspective towards horsemanship where we begin to look at life from the view point of the horse when we are in his world we will earn his respect and trust. In return he will give us his heart and there isn’t anything he won’t do for us when this happens. We hope you will help us make a difference in the lives of horses and horse lovers by ordering a copy and passing the word about this book along to your friends and associates.

In addition to the many camps, clinics and lessons we continue to offer, we have formed some study groups for those interested in getting together to support, inspire, and encourage one another on their horsemanship journey.
There are several women in the Omaha, Lincoln, Broken Bow and Grand Island areas who have already started meeting on a regular basis in order to advance even quicker and stay motivated toward excellence with horses.
We would like to see other groups popping up in other areas. If you are interested in starting or joining a study group call Sherry 308-730-2150. For now the locations change because sometimes we meet at a person's house to watch DVDs,and other times we will meet at an arena to ride. The study groups are free unless there is an arena charge.
So Please call before coming!
STUDY GROUP GUIDELINES
These study groups are not exclusive, meaning we want to encourage people to come who may not be familiar with "natural horsemanship". We don't want this to be a club where only the "chosen few enlightened ones" can join, however we also don't want this to turn into a place where people bring problem horses expecting free lessons and a quick fix. If you have a problem horse please seek the support of a professional trainer like Sherry. These groups are meant for students to express and show what they have learned with each other. It is a day of sharing creative ideas and free expression. In order to encourage people who have never taken a lesson from Sherry to attend we respectfully ask that the first time you attend you do so as an observer only. This way you will have a more objective view of what it is all about by not having to attend to a horse. You will get a better sense of the expression and techniques of natural horsemanship.
Of course if the study group is watching DVDs that day instead of playing with their horses, then anyone is encouraged to attend whether they have taken a lesson from Sherry or not. It doesn't even matter whether you have a horse yet, maybe you are just thinking about getting one, then by all means come and learn.
Please always call before coming 308-730-2150
We now have over 70 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.
This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings. This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net
