What is included in the Apprentice Program?
Available April through Nov
Covers horses, and tack
You may also bring your own horse and tack, if you do you must also bring your own horse feed, or pay extra if we provide it.
Includes weekend activities, unless the person wants to take a day or two off for their own pleasure
Fun off-ranch activities available locally
Our Long-term Apprentice Program is appropriate for those seeking a horse life-style type experience and want to know more about horse training, hosting clinics, and giving lessons. This will be fun, but hard work. In addition to riding and learning, you will be required to do care and maintenance for the horses and the facility.
We also have shorter Equestrian Vacations, Horse Riding Holidays, Horse Vacations, Riding Vacations and Working Ranch Vacations for the less serious horseman who would rather relax and have a good time. Three-four Week Sessions Are for serious students of horsemanship.
No prior experience is necessary.
Participation is limited.
Prospective Apprentice should submit an Application explaining your goals and why you think our Apprentice Program is right for you.
Choose among a great selection of horses to ride or bring your own.(Some have even brought colts to start)
Trail ride on 12,000 acres of open prairie sandhill country
Experience working horse ranch activities like cattle drives.
Observe training sessions at the corrals with our horses at different stages. This is a great question-and-answer opportunity for issues of concern to you.
Have your own private lessons.
Participate in group lessons.
Enjoy delicious meals with us or take the option of providing your own food.
In house accommodations for one person.
Rental house accommodations for more than one person.
Round-trip transportation between Grand Island airport and the Ranch provided.
Ride our tack or bring your own.
No experience required. Instruction included.
You may extend your stay with us upon mutual agreement on a week-by-week basis for a nominal weekly fee.
Apprentice returning for the third year and pursuing equine-related studies may apply for Scholarships to be awarded to your educational institution. Or you may even begin to earn wages depending on your skill level and seriousness.

Apprentice Program Fees
Bookings are held upon receipt of non-refundable deposit. Deposit is 1/2 of the total fee. The total fee depends upon the option you choose below. The balance is due at least thirty days prior to arrival and is non-refundable after that time. In cases of emergency cancellation, the payments may be credited toward another date or transferred to another person, at Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship owners discretion. (Transfers must occur within one year.) Some people purchase trip insurance, you may want to consider it.
Option #1: No Frills 3-week Private Apprentice:($1500) You stay in our house and eat with us, nothing fancy. We can only accommodate one person at a time for this option. (It is on a first come first serve basis.) It is available any time during the year. This is a shadowing apprentice which includes hard work. Basically you learn to live a horse business, where horse training, riding instruction, and all the other jobs of running a small business are experienced. You will be expected to help with chore, meals, dishes, do your own laundry, and whatever else needs done. Includes: horses, tack, spare bedroom accommodations, not much privacy, sharing one bathroom with family, meals, place to keep one horse, weekends at no additional charge during your three week stay. Pay only $400 to extend for the fourth week. Additional weeks $280/week by invitation only.
If you bring your own horse and do not bring feed for the horse add an additional $5.00/day when we have to provide feed for your horse. Back to Apprentice Information Quick Links
Option #2: Cost per person Option #2a: Small Group 3-week Apprentice ($1650) Option #2b: Small Group 2-week Apprentice($1100) Option #2c: Small Group 1-week Apprentice ($600)
Stay at Snyder Street Cottage with two other apprentices. Go to Snyder Street Cottage to see pictures and details about the cottage.
Option #2a,b, and c are only available during scheduled dates: (see schedule below) This is a group experience where classes will be held at specific times during the day. Then you will be given free time to experiment and work with horses. Homework will be assigned, like keeping a diary of things you are learning. There will be group trail rides and time for reflection and sharing.
Includes: instruction, horses, tack, cottage accommodations shared with two other apprentices, place to keep one horse, weekends at no additional charge during your two or three week stay. Since the cottage has a fully equipped kitchen you are on your own for meals.
Additional weeks by invitation only, new arrangement will be made and a reduced rate will be given.
If you bring your own horse and do not bring feed for the horse add an additional $5.00/day when we have to provide feed for your horse. Back to Apprentice Information Quick Links

Option #4: Private Luxury Apprentice ($175/day) Stay at Snyder Street Cottage by yourself. Go to Snyder Street Cottage to see pictures and details about the cottage.
Option #4 is by request only to be scheduled around other events.
This is an experience where you will have 4 hours of private instruction each day. Then you will be given free time to experiment and work with horses. Plus you will sit back watching Sherry work with some horses. Homework will be assigned, like keeping a diary of things you are learning. We will enjoy some relaxing trail rides together and time for reflection.
Some people with difficult or problem horses, or a person who is un-confident around horses have benefited from this option.
Includes: private instruction, horses, tack, cottage accomadations, place to keep one horse. Since the cottage has a fully equipped kitchen you are on your own for meals.
If you bring your own horse and do not bring feed for the horse add an additional $5.00/day when we have to provide feed for your horse.
Note: Apprentice should bring an additional $200 spending money for possible extra trips and activities which will be decided on by individuals upon arrival. These trips may include tubing, tanking, Rodeos, locat site seeing or events, etc.

Session Schedule
3 week intervals in which you can choose to only stay one or two of those weeks:

Apprentice must be eighteen years of age or older or be accompanied by an adult (exceptions after interniew with parent and child).
Our Apprentice environment is a hands-on learning process. Daily schedules are flexible due to weather, animal needs and other conditions. Responsibility rests with the Apprentice to observe our policies and take advantage of the opportunities at hand. Our policies will be reviewed in detail as part of the in-depth orientation upon arrival at the ranch. Helmets are strongly recommended, so bring your own or use ours. In compliance with the Certified Horsemanship Association, a helmet release MUST be signed if you choose not to use a helmet with in the vicinity of the corrals or horseback.
Applicants to the Apprentice Program should indicate your willingness and ability to endure long hours of physical activity. Be candid with yourself and with us about your goals and your limitations.
No prior experience is required. There are no right or wrong answers to “why you want to do this.” Goals are as numerous as the individuals who come here. However, you must know your goals, even if they evolve while you are here, and be self-motivated to achieve them under our close supervision. We will discuss with you whether your goals are realistic and work with you to achieve them.
