JULY NEWSLETTER Feature Article "Revealing the Truth Within"
Dear Horse lovers,

A poet put into words the very thing I search for when I am working with horses and riders, which is to "reveal the truth within". By "revealing the truth within" we are able to liberate the potential of both horse and rider, creating a harmonious relationship and picture of beauty and grace. This blueprint for our education in becoming master artisans of horsemanship may be found in the famous line of Robert Browning's "Paracelsus":

"Truth is within ourselves; it takes no rise
From outward things, what'er you may believe.
There is an inmost centre in us all,
Where truth abides in fullness; and around,
Wall upon wall, the gross flesh hems it in,
This perfect, clear perception which is truth.
A baffling and perverting carnal mesh
Binds it, and makes all error: and to know
Rather consists in opening out a way
Whence the imprisoned splendour may escape,
Than in effecting entry for a light
Supposed to be without."

After many years of working with a very troubled horse named Sunshine, I may be on the verge of discovering the secret which is transforming Sunshine from one state of mind to another. To say she has been a challenge is an understatement. Five years ago she started as a belligerent, defensive, and aggressive horse and now is turning into an intelligent and co-operative partner who will let her guard down with me from time to time, offering me a little trust.

I have discovered that deep within this troubled horse is an imprisoned wealth of magnificent character qualities. Those talents and graces, buried beneath her rough and tough physical exterior, did not need to be developed but instead liberated. Before the true horse could shine through in her I dug deep down within myself, finding many things in my own character which needed rooting out or at least modified in order to understand how to help Sunshine releive her tension and heal her scars. Through the process we both have been liberated to be who we are, expressing our talents with unreserved passion. Well, maybe me more than Sunshine, but I hope to continue to lead the way for her.

With continuous observations, constant experimentation, and the gentle techniques I have learned with natural horsemanship, I have begun to open all sorts of ways for Sunshine's imprisoned splendor to escape into expression. At first the expression was limited, timid and confined because of the newness of the experience, but now it is begining to be more spontaneous, exuberant and abundant. The defensive horse who was really terrified of everything is starting to share more of her real self with me. And it is this unrestricted sharing of her real self which has enabled me to accomplish more with her than some thought possible. It is not my perfect technique or my own horsemanship talent that has brought about this change in her, but my willingness to allow her to be the horse she is and aiming to bring out her best qualities.

I think it is very important to recognize the potential in a horse and in a rider, then give them the opportunity to reveal it from within. I guess that is my drive for providing clinics and camps for horses and people. The thing that has guided me with horses and students is that moment of recognition, that truth, when things are "right". We all know it, feel it and see it when that "rightness" happens. It is not difficult to spot, even an untrained eye can admire it.

Last week in the clinic at BKT in Lincoln we witnessed this moment of truth when we watched a young girl riding a plain brown horse named Molly. She is not an exceptional horse in confirmation or breeding. But together, horse and rider, looked like they were performing a ballet. All that was missing was the orchestra music, which wasn't necessary because they blended perfectly and not a note of music was needed to complete their harmony. Molly was so light on her feet, they were like a whisper in the dirt and her rider was a breath on her back. It was just a simple canter circle but there was something magical about it. Two beings as one. It was a moment of truth, peace, and happiness I will always remember.

I know when the riders are finding themselves because they look confident, elegant, and secure. I know when the horses are finding themselves because they choose to be deep in concentration, they experiment with their bodies and are happy in the work. Everyone can see it when things are right, but it can be hard to see what is missing when things are not right. Trying to find what is missing, figuring out how to draw out the latent talents and teach the required skills is the greatest challenge of what I do. Good horsemanship is so much more than technique or mechanics it is something that comes from within.

The brutal honest feedback provided by our horse is our best guide to the truth which is within us!

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

Student Testimonies and Richard Winters Clinic Report
Sherry is now a full Certified Safety Riding Instructor with AAHS

AAHS is the American Association of Horsemanship Safety. They conduct group and individual safety certification clinics for riding instructors, camp personnel and others interested in horsemanship safety. The clinics are 40 hours long and usually taught over a four-day or five-day period. They are taught by a AAHS Clinician from a standardized curriculum. Emphasis is upon legal liabilities, horsemanship skills, safety and emergency procedures, and assuring safety of riders quickly by teaching a balanced seat to beginners through use of the Secure Seat(sm) method.

STUDENT TESTIMONIES
Reports from clinic at BKT in Lincoln June 28-29

What a great time (as always). It is always amazing to me the neat people and horses I meet at clinics. It's always interesting hearing about their journeys and how they got to this point in their horsemanship. Anyway, it was a class of all mares (human and horses), I think that was a first for me. I attended with my mare Diesel.

In the morning we played with our horses on the ground. Sherry helped some of the humans work on refining their body language to be clearer, bigger, and more meaningful to the horse. She helped Diesel and me to move her ribs over to circle lighter with more collection. And yes I have homework ;-) We were playing the seven games moving them from level one (clunky, noisy, mechanical, uncoordinated) going towards a level two (fluid, snappy, with an economy of motion) playing them at the end of 22' rope.

We started our riding with lateral flexion and flowed into disengagement of the hindquarters, discussing the degree of bend in the horses neck. We did several exercises working the hind end of the horses both stationary and on the rail. We had a great discussion on bending, doubling, slowing with picking up a rein, moving into an inactive lateral flexion rein, and HQ disengagement.

Pretty much all of the clinic attendees decided we needed to be better at riding with a plan. I guess that's one of the reasons I love Sherry so much. We had six hours of riding and we never ran out of fun, imaginative things to do as a group in the arena AND we were expected to execute the exercises to the best of our ability being particular (which the more I learn about myself, the more I learn that particular is hard for me.

After lunch we experimented with the other two "zones" of the horse. Before lunch was the head/neck and the hindquarters. That left us with the shoulders then ribs. Again lots of fun and challenging exercises, including building our spins. One of the things I learned this weekend was how to properly move my ribs over without dropping my shoulder so that my horse can too.

A lot of times after working on an exercise Sherry would call out now go for a trot! We'd go where ever and however in the arena on a loose rein. It was really neat watching the riders and horses read each other as we trotted all over the arena. A couple of the mares were a bit on the "cranky" defensive side so we worked on some exercises that incorporated yo-yos and squeezes with the other riders being the obstacles that we were playing with. Some fun weaving patterns, some precision drill team tandem/in line manuevers, and riding towards a partner at a trot and backing away.

At the end of the clinic we worked on canter departures in the correct lead from a trot, a couple of circles, then finishing with a straight horse by focus to a post in the fence and then backing. Some of the clinic participants executed these moves flawlessly! And a couple of the horses demonstrated true collection for us. We ended the day with a discussion of collection (mental, emotional, and physical) and a plan for achieving it.

I think this is the most fun I've had in awhile, we had a day jam packed with learning and progression. I can't wait for the next one!
Leigh

P.S. I got to ride Sharon's Lexie for the first time, thanks for the honor.
P.S.S. I could go on forever in detail but life calls...

In thinking back on the afternoon I realized that Lexie did not once speed up like it was a race to be won in that arena. It was so enjoyable to be able to ride her, and not be worried sick that we would run in to someone if she got speedy and I couldn't control her. At other clinics remember how she would just zoom around? If other horses would come up along side her she would get faster so they couldn't pass. I wish someone would've passed us, nobody did. I don't know if they were just being considerate of us or not. But I'm proud of how she did.

It's like you said, all those little bothersome things just disappear once your communication improves. It is true!! We had soooo much fun!!! Thank you for being such a great teacher!! And I really loved it when you got off the horse and demonstrated what to do, that visual really helped me. I could see everything. Sometimes when you're on a horse you can't see the other side, what's going on there with the leg and arm. So being off was almost 3-D, so to speak!!
Sharon

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the clinic last weekend. I’m so glad you were able to put something together for us. I enjoyed meeting the other ladies and I learned so much. I gained confidence in my horse and myself. My horse is such a good girl. I’m very lucky to have her. She is so much more attentive on the ground now. She follows me around in her pen when I go to muck it.
Thanks for everything.
Steph

Richard Winters Clinic Report

I'm back from WY where I attended the Richard Winters Reined Cow Working Clinic at the Horse Works Wyoming Ranch in Grass Creek. Even though I drove 1250 miles in two days by myself the miles went by quickly as the scenery was so beautiful. The hills are sure green everywhere. I will be going back to Lusk WY June 20-22nd to teach a clinic. I will be doing a free demo Friday evening and a clinic Sat. and Sun. There is still room for a couple of riders. Auditor are also welcome.

It was freezing cold in WY. The first day it drizzled rain on us all day and then the next day there was a bitter cold wind. We all got free skin exfolitions. I had forgotten when the wind blows in WY the dust is awful. It felt like little pricks on my face all day. At least there were NO BUGS! Way too cold for that.

Richard was great, a very humble good horseman. I didn't really learn any new technique but refined much. I also learned some neat games to play with partners and also activities to do with a big group of riders. There were 15 riders in the clinic all of varying degrees of abilities, from beginners to trainers. Everybody tried and worked hard according to their level and goals. As always when one takes the time to open yourself to learning and practice, improvement is inevitable and everyone made progress. It was fun to be a student again! I enjoyed every minute.

I rode a really neat Rock Mountain horse that belonged to the ranch. He was only about 14 hands chocolate brown with white mane and tail. He was full of spunk and energy, and was pretty sensitive. Lots and lots of go and not much whoa at first. I prefer this kind of horse rather than one with very little go. He was a blast to ride and we really bonded in the two days. I hated to leave him and shed a tear when I turned him loose on the last day as I thanked him for the good rides.

We did some friendly contests with partners. For one of the games my partner was a young guy about 19 from Cody who is a roper, and we WON! We were instructed to ride holding hands. When you broke hands you were out of the game. We were suppose to make it look as pretty as possible, keeping the horses in rhythm with each other doing the same things and be creative. The prettiest team who didn't break hands were the winners. In order to get the teams breaking up we gradually increased the speed. We were the last team still holding on and took a gallop victory lap holding hands. Everyone told us to quit showing off. It was a thrill, I must say.

For those coming to the alumni camp in Oct. we will be playing some of these partner games. You will love them. So get signed up soon so you don’t miss out on your early bird discount which ends Aug. first.

SUMMER & FALL Clinic or Camp SAVINGS!

Are you ready to provide the dedication and perspiration to learn more and at the same time save a little cash for travel costs?

Given fuel prices, I wondered what I could do to be of more assistance. Here’s what I came up with…...

Anyone who signs up by Aug. 1st for a 2 day clinic in Sept. Oct. or Nov. will save $50 off the total tuition…

Anyone who signs up by July 20th for a Camp at the Calamus in Aug. will save $75 off the total tuition......

Anyone who signs up by Aug. 15th for the Women's Camp at the Calamus in Sept will save $100 off the tuition.....

Anyone who hosts a 2 day clinic this fall and gets 7 other people signed up will get to participate in the clinic for free plus get a coupon for $100 off a camp for next year at the Calamus Outfitters.
**You will also be required to make arena arrangements etc.

The last idea I have is an internship.
Last year I had a very successful time with Erica. If anyone is interested in this opportunity, call for more information. Erica lived and breathed with me for a month. She got private lessons and attended all my clinics and camps as part of her internship. I paid for all the fuel costs for the clinics and events she attended with me. This will save a bunch of fuel costs, you just need to get here and then the long term arrangment works to your advantage instead of trying to find clinics and camps to attend. **I do charge for room and board plus a lesson fee depending upon which Success Journey you chose.

You can use any of these savings to help pay for your fuel.

**In order to recieve the discount a non-refundable deposit must accompany the registration form prior to the date deadline. $100 deposit for 2 day clinics and $200 deposit for 08 camps at Calamus Outfitters Ranch.

Introducing THE SUCCESS JOURNEY Phone Consultations and Video Evaluations
THE MISSION: To help people Live and Achieve their DREAMS across the miles.

Here is another idea to help fight rising fuel costs. THE SUCCESS JOURNEY is a personalized instruction and training program which can reach across the miles by using your phone, video camera, computer, and the old fashion paper and pencil.

For a while now I have been doing phone consultations and even some video evaluations using You Tube to give people advice and ideas of how to solve their horse problems and advance to the next level. More recently I have also been doing some business consulting work for people diving into the horse business giving them confidence and tools to move forward or for people needing new ideas and direction for an existing business.

Whether you need advice, assistance, more confidence, new ideas, and tools, to go to the next level I will help you achieve your dreams by giving you one/one assistance and a customized curriculum that is designed specifically for you.

Did you know that all the best athletes, horsemen, teachers and trainers all have coaches and mentors? Pat Parelli often credits his teachers for helping him achieve his successes with horses. No one ever made it alone. We all need somone who inspires us, encourages us, acknowledges our triumphs and holds us accountable. I am no different. I have had many mentors to guide and direct me through business, my personal life and horsemanship. With hard work and determination I am now applying with success the principles I have learned from these mentors.

I now want to offer the same opportunity to some of the most dedicated students in a way that won't break your bank. With rising gas prices causing travel to be more difficult for some, this new idea for continual learning seems to make sense. Instead of waiting and hoping you are on the right track in achieving your horsemanship dreams and goals, I want to be there and guide you each step of the way, thus the birth of THE SUCCESS JOURNEY opportunity.

How does THE SUCCESS JOURNEY work?

Each month as a SUCCESS JOURNEY student you will receive:

Personal Phone Calls: (For either horsemanship or business) This is where we get to outline and assess how everything is going, celebrate successes, provide motivation, build confidence, avert common pitfalls and define new goals. You will need a pencil and paper to take notes and write down your assignments for the week.

Horsemanship Video Coaching: In the videos we ask for 15 minutes of recorded footage where you are with your horse now. We will review the video footage together in our phone calls. I want to see what you are playing with to help you excel and improve. Video coaching has proven to be a very powerful tool and an exceptional way to mark progress and success.

What's in it for you?

My goal is to hold nothing back allowing the truth within you to be revealed which will empower you for a SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY. I will share all of my knowledge and experience, inspire and empower you. You will enjoy the benefits of a safer relationship with your horse a reguvenated confidence and motivation to reach new heights. You will face new challenges with more excitement and fun. Past frustrations will begin to fade being replaced by more celebrations!!! More than anything, you live your dreams!

Given each and every person has different needs there are 3 opportunities to choose from.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who will I be coached by?

I will be coached by Sherry herself?

How do the phone calls work? Who calls who? When will you call?
Sherry will call you at a scheduled date and time.

What do I need for my phone call?
You will need a pen and paper to take notes.

What if I miss my phone call?
Sherry will try three times to get hold of you, if we are unable to connect, then she will try again at the next scheduled time.

How do the videos work? How can I send videos?
Video tapes can be sent in a few forms.
Most preferably by email, as this is the fastest, most efficient and cost effective.
If this is not an option, post is fine, send DVD or VHS.
Putting these clips up on a web hosting site like You Tube is also a good option.

What do you want to see in the video’s?
The idea of these video’s is so I can view what you are playing with or having trouble with, in the next phone coaching session we would watch this together, outlining what is going well and what could be done differently.
Sometimes I may ask for specific topics that arise from our conversations.

Is there a time frame within the month that I need to send the video in?
Yes, I need to have the video clip at least one week before the call so I can look at it, to make sure it works etc.

I am a Golden Success Journey Student can I send one 30 minute video rather than two 15 minute videos?
Yes you can.

Horses? Do I have to have just one horse or can I do this program with multiple horses?
Lots of people have lots of horses. I prefer you pick one horse to go through this success journey with.
Of course the more you learn you will be able to transfer to many different horses. If questions arise about your other horses, we want to address them with any extra time we may have in our phone calls.

What if my horse goes lame or has a problem?
You can of course change horses if there are any issues.

What if I want to upgrade during my year to Silver or Golden Success Journey?
You are welcome to upgrade at any time. Please notify Sherry to make the arrangements.

Sherry's Book
"Win Your Horse's Heart"
"WIN YOUR HORSE'S HEART" Sherry's book will be out sometime this year.

There are only two kinds of people, those who love horses and those who don't. This book is definitely for those who do love horses, whether you own one or not. Sherry's passion and love for horses has driven her to write a book which presents a way of being with horses which will enable us to win any horse's heart. When a horse gives us his whole heart he will jump higher, run faster, stop quicker, slide further, spin better, and be safer. Dreams are sure to come true to those who follow the common sense principles presented in this book with real life stories to support the practices.
Join A Study Group or our Yahoo Chat Group
In addition to the many camps, clinics and lessons we continue to offer, we have formed some study groups for those interested in getting together to support, inspire, and encourage one another on their horsemanship journey.

There are several women in the Omaha, Lincoln, Broken Bow and Grand Island areas who have already started meeting on a regular basis in order to advance even quicker and stay motivated toward excellence with horses.

We would like to see other groups popping up in other areas. If you are interested in starting or joining a study group call Sherry 308-730-2150.

For now the locations change because sometimes we meet at a person's house to watch DVDs,and other times we will meet at an arena to ride. The study groups are free unless there is an arena charge.

So Please call before coming!

STUDY GROUP GUIDELINES

These study groups are not exclusive, meaning we want to encourage people to come who may not be familiar with "natural horsemanship". We don't want this to be a club where only the "chosen few enlightened ones" can join, however we also don't want this to turn into a place where people bring problem horses expecting free lessons and a quick fix. If you have a problem horse please seek the support of a professional trainer like Sherry.

These groups are meant for students to express and show what they have learned with each other. It is a day of sharing creative ideas and free expression.

In order to encourage people who have never taken a lesson from Sherry to attend we respectfully ask that the first time you attend you do so as an observer only. This way you will have a more objective view of what it is all about by not having to attend to a horse. You will get a better sense of the expression and techniques of natural horsemanship.

Of course if the study group is watching DVDs that day instead of playing with their horses, then anyone is encouraged to attend whether they have taken a lesson from Sherry or not. It doesn't even matter whether you have a horse yet, maybe you are just thinking about getting one, then by all means come and learn.

Please always call before coming 308-730-2150

We now have over 70 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.

This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.

This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net

Physcial Health
Skin Care, Diet and Exercise
Sherry has been told over and over that she looks and acts much younger than she is. Those who have taken lessons with her have experienced her energy and passion.

Her secrets are eat well, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, don't drink or smoke, use sunscreen, wear a hat and take really good care of your skin with a dermatology tested and proven skin care system.

If you would like to find out more about the special skin care and dietary aide products that Sherry uses to stay looking young and full of energy call her at 308-730-2150 or 308-346-5663.

Sherry knows that a good horsemanship program will affect every area of your life. Staying in shape is part of it. Call Sherry to visit more about how she stays in shape for her horses. Or maybe, how her horses keep her in shape.
Mental and Emotional Health
Sherry has been through some stressful and challenging times in her life like the rest of you.
She has bounced back through many life changes by keeping a positive outlook on life even though depression tried to take over at times. It seemed that her horses always kept her on track and so it was only natural that she wanted to share their healing powers with others.
