Meandering with Sunshine in the Shade
The late July sun was beaming sultry,
A gentle breeze came from the southeast,
Which made it comfortable in the shade,
Where I took the lovely painted beast.

“Sunshine” as the mare was named,
Came to me full of insecurities & fears,
As we have developed our relationship,
It has been full of both joys and tears.

As we left the coral through the front gate,
The first bite of grass was full of pain,
When a yellow jacket stung her on the nose,
I didn’t blame her for shaking her mane.

We meandered through the front yard,
Investigating things that gave her a scare,
Each time moving closer & staying longer,
Remembering our game must always be fair.

Every threshold of real or perceived danger,
Together we were able to defeat,
Helped build her confidence & curiosity,
And now we felt a bit more complete.

The Frisbee the dog loves to fetch,
She observed & approached with caution,
Until finally she stomped it assertively,
Securing her self-preservation.

In the living-room picture window,
She saw another beautiful horse,
Whom she greeted warmheartedly,
Then neighed when she left, of coarse.

Now that Sunshine is learning to be brave,
Soon she will be able to outshine the rest,
Because lying dormant inside her,
Is a partner that wants to be the very best!
