How the Camps Came About?

Dear Horse lovers,
I have taught several one-day clinics to young people particularly those who are in 4-H. I will continue to offer these one-day classes at a reduced rate for 4-h groups, however there is simply not enough time in one day to cover very much material. And students always go away wanting more. I always feel like we are just getting started then it’s time to go. Many students want to return for more learning but it is often months or even longer before their schedule coincides with another class in their area. I understand the time constraints and monetary budgets people deal with these days. By offering a longer learning experience without interruptions the value and quality of the experience will lead to greater retention and therefore even better results when you go back home. When I went to a weeklong class I was amazed at the difference in the experience and how much more I got out of it.

I would like to offer a full 7 days, however, from research it seems that most people are so busy they felt 3-5 days away from home was about all they could sacrifice. If you know of a perfect location for such a camp, I would love to hear from you. I am not tied to one particular location. However the Calamus Outfitters Ranch seems perfect for now, because we will have all of our needs met by the staff of the Ranch so we can focus on our horse relationship. Plus other great activities are also available for us incase anyone needs a break from the horse instruction.

We had three of these camps in 2006 and they were a real hit. In fact after three days some students wanted more and we extended the camp an extra day. After experiencing the camp with a small number of participants I have decided to keep the camps small for the kids. I like being able to help each child and their horse individually. I am only accepting 4-5 kids and one or two adult sponsors. The cabins at Calamus Outfitters sleep six with comfort. However, we may have to get two cabins or the lodge if we end up with girls and boys. So far I have had all girls and their Moms.

The camps were both fun and exhausting. We not only did lots of trail riding, and played ground games with obstacles; we also swam in the lake plus ate plenty of S’mores and good food. We saw cattle, deer, grouse, sand turtles, and coyotes on our trail rides, plus lots of wild flowers and cactus. The girls had a chance to ride their horses and Cisco bareback. One girl even rode her 14-month-old paint for the first time bareback and at a trot. It was a wonderful experience for everyone.

This camp is not only about developing a relationship with your horse, but about building your confidence as a leader and partner for your horse. You will grow closer to your horse and develop a new self-awareness of what you can accomplish. Please join us!

Sincerely,
Sherry Jarvis

WHY A CAMP TYPE RETREAT?

Dear Horse lovers,
Say Goodbye to stale hotel rooms and common approaches to horsemanship clinics. Join us at the gorgeous Calamus Outfitters Ranch in the beautiful Sand hills of NE to experience a development retreat where nature is your classroom, horses are your teachers, and you discover more than you might expect about yourself. The ranch has spectacular sunsets, a peaceful environment, featuring a cozy lodge and home cooked meals. Awaken each day to the sounds of country life and finish each day under a blanket of stars or with a campfire sing along.

This will be a retreat that equips and encourages you to move beyond perceived limitations. You will be given positive support and strategies toward becoming a more confident leader for your horse. You will experience personal growth at this retreat which will transfer to other areas of their lives. We hope that you go away knowing and experiencing the power of discovering how changing on the inside will dramatically impact your horsemanship skills and all other goals you may have.

We will not only focus on riding, but on reading a horse. During the four days horses will provide us constant and instant feedback about our progress. Because horses see through the slightest of change of emotions and intention they will help us re-examine habits and patterns that may be holding our progress back. Horses see through the times when we say one thing but are really thinking and feeling another. They do this by reflecting back what they see in the handler’s behavior. So they are acting as a very responsive biofeedback agent offering us constant feedback for our actions. Through interaction with a horse you will become more aware of your own desires, attitudes, strengths, and weaknesses.

A tremendous boost in confidence comes from learning how to connect and then direct a thousand pound animal through mental focus, creative visualization, and clarity of intent. These skills, which can be difficult to teach in a traditional training session, are fun to learn and have many applications in how we relate to people everyday. You will also learn greatly from your fellow participants. Through
group sessions you will foster this unique developmental connection to receive insights and to contribute to each other’s greater leadership mastery. It is intended to be a community in the best sense of the word where you are allowed to communiate openly.

We hope this will be a life changing experience and that during the camp you will not only have a new sense of purpose, but will acquire skills and insights necessary to shift behaviors so that you can be more effective toward whatever it is you want to achieve. Growth comes from being able to communicate your true feelings and access your strengths in a supportive environment that encourages your natural talents to emerge. We know through learning to listen and communicate with horses more effectively it will improve your abiltity to listen and communicate with anyone. These are valuable skills which will benefit you in every endeavor in your life.

Through interaction with horses you will deepen your awareness of personal issues, body tension, and attitudes that may be inhibiting your dreams from becoming reality. Come, let your heart find wings so that your dreams can fly.
Sincerely,
Sherry Jarvis

Aren't they beautiful together?
TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS & BENEFITS FOR YOUR CHILD

Dear Parents,
I want you to know my qualifications for teaching these summer horsemanship camps. I have been a certified teacher for 20 years. I have taught K-8 grades and substitute taught in high schools.

I have successfully competed in rodeos and horseshows, but my focus now is on instruction and training.I have trained horses for Pitzer Ranch near Ericson, and Broken Bones Ranch in WY. I started training at a very early age under the guidance of my father. Throughout the years I have started many young horses and helped people with problem horses.

Six years ago I began an intensive study of natural horsemanship that changed my attitudes and thinking, causing me to be even more effective with both horses and people. I have taken a couple of horses to level three Parelli natural horsemanship standards, and several to level two.

I have given private riding lessons for years. I started teaching horsemanship full time two years ago, as I couldn't keep up with two jobs.

I have been a 4-H volunteer, Sunday school teacher, gymnastic, dance and sign language coach, plus I have helped with various other youth organizations.

I wanted to share with you some interesting research that I recently found that supports what I am doing at our summer horsemanship camps.

By Cindy Schonholtz
The American Youth Horse Council (AYHC) has partnered with Pennsylvania State University to conduct research that quantifies what we already know: Kids + Horses = Magic! One of the strategic goals of the AYHC is to validate the measurable impact of equine activities on youth development. There have been few scientific studies conducted that measure the impact of horse activities on horsemanship and life skills development. AYHC and Penn State teamed up with the National High School Rodeo Association, 4-H, Pony Club and the American Quarter Horse Youth Association to conduct this important research.

The Impact of Equine Activities Survey contained questions related to horsemanship skills, life skills and demographic characteristics. Content and validity of the survey was validated by a panel of experts and by conducting a field test. A sample of 982 youth between the ages of 12 and 18 active in the above youth equine organizations was selected. Responding youth indicated that they “most of the time” to “always” performed horsemanship skills in the area of handling, safety, riding, nutrition and health management. Similarly, respondents indicated that they “often” exhibited life skills relative to decision making, communicating, goal setting, problem solving and critical thinking. A significant positive relationship was found between total horsemanship skills development and life skills development. This information should be very valuable for youth leaders when developing curriculum, planning activities and seeking funding and resources.

This research supports our idea for the camps that I am conducting for both youth and women. What I am teaching and what you will experience is not just about the performance of your horse.

Good horsemanship has a holistic approach with focus on both the horse and the rider, where relationship is key. Skills developed include, listening, communication, problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, creativity, goal setting, empathy, patience, sensitivity, self-awareness, confidence, leadership, self-control, perseverance, justice, dignity, caring, and sharing.

These are skills I intend to build upon at the teen summer camps. The above list is a very powerful self-development program, which will help guide our youth toward self-esteem that will sustain and enhance them through life.

It doesn't matter what discipline or activity kids choose to compete in, the concepts and principles that I teach will benefit them because they will learn to communicate more effectively with their horse. It is my desire to be of assistance to youth who love horses so they can be even more successful. According to my research, my camp cost is very competitive in price.

Sincerely,
Sherry Jarvis
