Las Vegas Nebraskans – News & Notes

Migration Trip to Lincoln – October 23 thru 26 - The Las Vegas Nebraskans club has organized a trip to Lincoln for a Nebraska football game. The excursion will be the weekend of the Baylor game, Oct. 23-26. Scroll down on this “Newsletter” for more details, including reservations information.

TV Viewing Location Moves to Torino’s Sports Pub & Restaurant – The LVN Board of Trustees recently voted unanimously to relocate the TV viewing site of Husker football games to Torino’s Sports Pub & Restaurant, located at 5570 West Flamingo (near West Flamingo & Lindell). The logistics changed this year due to some major decisions by Bugsy’s management. As a result of their decisions, in all probability, our fans wouldn’t have access to the large event room for about half of the games. This would cause our patrons to watch the games in the “bar” section where unobstructed TV viewing could only accommodate about 1/3 of our fans. While Bugsy’s event room was a great spot to watch the games last year, the Board felt a move was necessary. We think you'll enjoy Torino’s as it is a spacious venue to watch the games with several big screen hi-def. TVs, good food & drinks, plenty of parking and is centrally located. Children are welcome at Torino’s when accompanied by an adult. Also, this is a “smoke-free” facility. Smokers are relegated to smoke outside the building.

Husker Football on Radio - Hear Nebraska football games again this fall on radio KSHP (1400 on the AM dial). The pre-game Cornhusker Countdown Show will be aired this season on Fridays at 2:00pm on station KLAV (1230 on the AM dial).

Radio Advertisers Needed for Nebraska Football - If you or your employer would like to be an advertiser on the Nebraska football radio broadcasts heard in Las Vegas, please call Gary at 228-1616. This unique marketing, with affordable advertising rates, provides sports programming that reaches thousands of listeners every game. Get your message to Nevada residents through a targeted market that has a receptive listening audience. The cost is only $600 for the season and that includes two minutes of your commercial message on every broadcast.

If you don’t have a business or service to promote, you can support the Las Vegas Nebraskans by purchasing a Las Vegas Nebraskans club announcement for a very reasonable cost of $300 for the season. This fall will mark the 19th consecutive year that Husker football can be heard on radio throughout the Vegas Valley.

SEE THE HUSKERS PLAY IN LINCOLN

Nebraska vs. Baylor

October 23 – October 26, 2008

It’s the annual Las Vegas Nebraskans migration to Lincoln for a fun-filled weekend when Nebraska plays Baylor on Saturday, Oct. 25 in a Big-12 Conference battle. The Huskers have a new coach in Bo Pelini plus the team has a renewed winning attitude. Football fever is getting hot in Lincoln. However, to go on the trip, you must act now. Only
a limited number of reservations are available
. The travel schedule has changed slightly as Allegiant Airlines is discontinuing service to Lincoln effective September 4. Their new Nebraska destination city is Grand Island.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, our group will depart Las Vegas on Allegiant at 7:35am and will fly non-stop to Grand Island, arriving at 12-Noon. A chartered motorcoach will pick-up our travelers at the Grand Island airport and takes us to Lincoln. Lodging for the three nights has been changed this year to a newer facility, the Lincoln Microtel Inn & Suites, located at 2505 Fairfield St. (approximately North 27th & Superior streets). The Microtel is a nation-wide motel chain that prides itself in comfortable bedding with down-like comforters and upgraded thread-count linens. The facility is three stories with an elevator. Also included are free internet service and a complimentary daily continental breakfast.

Experience all the thrills of being in Lincoln for a football weekend and also have the opportunity to watch the Huskers play in Memorial Stadium. To add to this excitement, on Friday morning, Oct. 24, our group will board a chartered motorcoach, headed for Memorial Stadium and an exclusive guided tour. You’ll be amazed at all the additions and improvements including the playing surface, skyboxes and media accommodations. And, completed in 2006, the new state-of-the-art scoreboard, the additional seats and the Tom & Nancy Osborne Athletic Facility. The entire football complex is truly outstanding.
The balance of Friday morning and the afternoon will be spent on interesting tours. Arrangements are being completed to visit the Lied Transplant Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. This is one of the most reputable and well known organ transplant programs in the country and through dedicated efforts in education, research and clinical medicine, has helped shape the field of transplantation. This promises to be an outstanding tour.
Then it’s on for a tour of Rotella’s Italian Bakery who has been baking Italian breads, buns, dinner rolls and specialty breads in the Omaha area since 1921. Their delicious products are served in many of the famous Omaha restaurants.
Finally, we'll conclude our Friday motorcoach sojourn with a stop at the award-winning Soaring Wings Winery, located on the outskirts of Omaha, near Springfield. Soaring Wings makes high quality wine that competes on the international level. In the past four years, they have won over 120 medals in international competition. Sampling is available. Following our stop at the winery, we’ll head back to the hotel and should be there by 5:00pm. The tours on Friday are optional and your attendance is not mandatory.
The Saturday, Oct. 25 schedule will revolve around the game. Kickoff time has not been officially announced. No matter the game time, our chartered motorcoach will take us to the stadium area some three hours before the kickoff. This will permit you time to join your friends or family in having a bite to eat at the various tailgating sites or to stop by some of the popular pre-game establishments in downtown Lincoln. About an hour and a half following the game, the bus will take us back to the hotel.

The evenings are “open” nights with no planned events. In the area adjacent to the hotel there are plenty of restaurants and lounges. As we’ll have a large number of rental cars, sharing evening transportation to some of the popular "nite-spots" or "pep-rallies" shouldn't be a problem.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, we’ll need to be checked out of the hotel and ready to board the motorcoach by 9:00am for the drive to Grand Island. The return flight departs Grand Island at12:40pm and arrives non-stop in Las Vegas at 1:20pm..

The price of the excursion starts at only $434.50 per person (includes $15 to help defray the cost of the bus) however, the actual cost is based on your lodging preference. The various prices are shown on the following page. If you enjoy traveling with Big Red football fans and would like to see the Huskers play in Lincoln, this is an outstanding trip.
