WILDLIFE REFUGES

Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge: Located 4 miles east of Fort Calhoun, it was opened in 1996. It is a jiont federal and local conservation partnership to restore a portion of the Missouri River habitat that flows through a 2.5 mile long channel paralleling the main flow of the river. Compatible recreation activities, like nature walks, picnicking, birding, biking, fishing, and canoeing, allow people to enjoy the wildlife of the restored floodplain forest and adjacent grasslands. DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge/Steamboat BERTRAND:
Several miles east of Hwy 75 on Hwy 30 is the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DeSoto offers visitors a spectacular up-close view of migrating widlife from a glass-enclosed observation deck. Each spring and fall, the refuge is stopover point for hundreds of thousands of migratory ducks and geese. During typical years, more than a half a million snow geese feed on the refuge grounds during their fall migration betweenthe Arctic and Gulf Coast. The Steamboat Museum has on display thousands of artifacts recovered from the Steamboat BERTRAND, which sank on a snag of the Missouri River in 1865. The museum is located on the grounds of DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge.

Neale Woods Nature Preserve: Located approximately five miles south of Fort Calhoun, it is a 554 acre nature preserve with interpretive center and live exhibits, as well as hiking trails.

Winnebago Tribe's Bison (Buffalo) Herd: The tribe has developed this herd on the west side of Hwy 75 just north of Winnebago. An interpretive and visitors' center is planned to encourage visitors to stop and observe the herd. The bison herd has been developed for the past six years and is still growing. Young bison calves are usually visible to the traverler who stops. An understanding of the cultural importance of the bison to Plains tribal culutre is a primary focus of maintaining the herd at Winnebago.
