Civilians Get an Inside Look at High-Speed Military Training

By: Candice Jamoles
For the first time in the history of the of the Army’s premiere training post, the National Training Center, civilians are getting a rare glimpse into how Soldiers prepare for combat in the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The new initiative is called NTC Tours.
“What we’re really doing is an interactive, combat-focused Broadway play,” said Brig. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard, commanding general of NTC and Fort Irwin.
NTC Tours invites visitors to enter into The Box, NTC’s main training area.  The Box consists of 13 Iraqi-like villages including the largest, Medina Wasl.  During most months, Soldiers from various units in the Army come to NTC to endure an intensive, two-week training period.  During their training, Soldiers interact with Arabic-speaking role-players and opposing military forces.
“We are thrilled to share what we do here at the National Training Center with the rest of the country,” said Col. James Chevallier, garrison commander of NTC and Fort Irwin.  “Many have always been curious about what goes on at NTC.  Now they will see first-hand.”
The trainers at NTC say Soldiers receive the most realistic training possible.  A team of special-effects professionals helped simulate explosions and even injuries.  During training, Soldiers experience simulated combat.  This is when they go toe-to-toe with NTC Soldiers who play enemy insurgents.  These resident Soldiers play the Opposing Force and simulate Iraqi and Afghani insurgents.  Visitors touring NTC will experience a memorable, exciting, inspiring, and some say sobering day.
