Year Seven: The Legend Lives On

The Midwestern Longhorn Association announces their recent membership in the Iowa Beef Breeds Council. The Iowa Beef Breeds Council promotes various member cattle breeds throughout Iowa. The IBBC sponsors the Iowa Beef Expo, which features various cattle breeds, shows and sales, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds every February.

The MLA was founded in 1997 by various Texas Longhorn Breeders in Iowa and surrounding states. The MLA has fifty members from Iowa, Minnesota, Texas, Maryland, Nebraska, Missouri and Pennsylvania. The MLA is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the Texas Longhorn breed and to the education of the public on the various positive attributes of the Texas Longhorn. Those attributes include calving ease on first calf heifers, lean quality meat that is low in cholesterol, hardiness and disease resistance.

The MLA promotes the Texas Longhorn breed at various functions - this past year the association held Longhorn shows at the Wapello County Fair and the Wyoming, Iowa fairgrounds. The MLA also held a Cattle Drive in conjunction with the Leon Rodeo on the 4th of July. The Trail Drive featured fifty head of trophy steers, cows and calves. One awesome trophy steer on the drive sports an impressive 86" horns tip to tip. Two of the steers featured on the trail drive carry the Circle 95 brand, signifying that they also were part of the Great American Cattle Drive in 1995 that trailed250 Texas Longhorn Steers from Fort Worth to Miles City.

The MLA looks forward to working with the Iowa Beef Council to promote cattle in Iowa and nationwide and sharing the legacy of the great Texas Longhorn Breed.
