Island Park is located in the northeastern area of Idaho close to the Continental Divide and just west of the Wyoming border. This area has similar geological features to Yellowstone. Climbing in elevation you are actually driving up the

edge of an ancient caldera, a collapsed volcano. The Caldera is 18 miles long and 23 miles wide with a 1200 foot scarp on the west and south rims. Once at the top the landscape levels to rolling hills surrounded by mountain peaks. Located at the center of Island Park is Harriman State Park, comprised of 4330 acres of rolling forest and meadow. Surrounded by a 16,000 acre wildlife refuge the park is a haven to the rare trumpeter swan along with other wildlife.
