New Industry Defined: ICServ Considered and ASP by Industry Consortium

The Application Service Provider (ASP) industry has recently been formed. According to the ASP Consortium, "The Application Service Provider (ASP) industry is a rapidly emerging segment of the computer industry. Many different kinds of companies are involved in the ASP industry, and these include computer software and hardware companies, network service providers, Internet service providers (ISPs), and ASP companies."

Application Service Providers are defined as third-party entities that manage and distribute software-based services and solutions to customers across a wide area network from a central data center.

One such company, ICServ, is based in Rexburg, ID. According to Bruce Eckman, founder of ICServ, "we knew the technology we have developed was different than the standard ISP or hosting company but have had a hard time explaining to people how we are different." "With the establishment of the ASP industry," Eckman continues, "We will have an Industry Consortium to define what it is that we do."
