RN SURVEY RELEASED

The federal government has released its National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN,) done every four years. It's the most extensive and comprehensive survey of America's RNs, done by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Here are some of the findings from this survey.

  • The number of RNs licensed and working was estimated to be 2,909,467. This is an increase of 8% since 2000.
  • Of this estimated 2,909,467 RNs, 83.2% were working in nursing (an estimated 2,421,461), and 16.8% were not employed in nursing.
  • RNs keep getting older. In the 1996 survey, the average age of a RN was 42.3 years; in this survey it was 46.8 years.
  • The number of men licensed as RNs remains stable -- 5.4% in the 2000 survey and 5.7% in this survey.
  • The number of advanced practice nurses increased from 7.3% of all RNs in the 2000 survey to 8.3% in this survey.
More facts and figures about nurses. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing, AACN, released figures on baccalaureate nursing programs, in the U.S., last month.
  • Colleges and universities denied 32,617 qualified applicants admission to baccalaureate nursing programs, primarily due to faculty shortages.
  • This is the fifth consecutive year of an increase in students enrolled in baccalaureate nursing programs. There were six years of declining enrollments, from 1995-2000.
Finally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics continues to consistently project the need for more than one million new and replacement nurses, in the U.S., by 2012.
