Health Care Inflation Moderates (November 1, 2004)
A new survey on health care costs for employer-sponsored health care plans shows an expected average rise in 2005, of 8 percent. (The average cost for the US government for Federal employees will be 7.9 percent during 2005.) This will be the first time in the past five years that the cost increase for employer-sponsored plans has been in the single digits. This survey shows the total average cost of health coverage to an employer in a company-sponsored plan will be $7,761 in 2005. The average employee will pay $1,610 of this amount with the employer paying $6,151. The reasons for this moderation, include:
- Employers who are still providing health insurance for their employees are buying less coverage
- Employees are being required to make bigger co-payments
- Employers are doing hardball negotiations with health plans and providers in order to obtain better deals
