Nancy Claflin, RN, PhD, CCRN, CPHQ, FNAHQ first joined the NOVA board in 2002. She has served on the board as Secretary, Membership Secretary, Editor of News from NOVA, and President-Elect. She has also served as Publications Chair, History Chair, and Legislative Chair.

Nancy is the Associate Chief, Nursing Service for Operations/Deputy Nurse Executive at the Phoenix VA Healthcare System in Phoenix, Arizona. In this role, her job responsibilities include oversight and coordination of nursing service and nursing programs, including nursing quality improvement, nursing recruitment, nursing orientation, and nursing education.

She has been with the VA in Phoenix since 1974, after graduating from Arizona State University (ASU) with a BSN. She has worked as a staff nurse, nurse manager, nursing supervisor, and nurse educator in medical, surgical, and intensive care units. She also maintained a collateral assignment as the Nursing Quality Improvement Coordinator. She received her Masters Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing from ASU in 1977, and completed her PhD in Health and Human Services in 2001.

She is certified as a professional in health care quality (CPHQ), and in critical care nursing (CCRN), and was named a Fellow of the National Association for Healthcare Quality in 1999 (FNAHQ). She is a member of NAHQ, the Arizona Association for Healthcare Quality, the American Nurses Association, the Arizona Nurses Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, ASU College of Nursing Alumni Association, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Theta Tau.
