The lobby (designed as a re-creation of an anteroom in the Palace of Versailles), meeting rooms, and intimate dining areas showcase eighteenth-century antiques, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, French tapestries, and Persian carpets.
The Westgate is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Diego, facing the Horton Plaza Shopping Mall, one block from the Gaslamp Quarter, across from the Civic Center and a short walking distance from the Convention Center. The Westgate is one of the best San Diego Hotels.

Built in 1970 by San Diego banker & financier, C. Arnholt Smith, at a construction cost of $14.5 million - it was the most expensive hotel built in the country at that time. Smith wandered all over Europe in search of furnishings & paintings. One purchase was a $150,000 eighteenth-century marble fireplace flanked by gilded bronze nymphs, which is now in the elegant Versailles Ballroom.
Magnificent chandeliers of hand-cut Baccarat crystal, specially made for the Westgate in Milan, Italy, crown the lobby & Versailles Ballroom.
For more information on the elegant antiques and paintings by Boucher, Fragonard and Gainsborough which fill the public rooms, read about it on the Westgate website: www.westgatehotel.com/company/history
