Mezzo-Soprano Janet Rabe-Meyer: Described by Marcus Kalipolites of the Times Herald-Record as possessing a “radiant voice and intense acting”, mezzo soprano Janet
Rabe-Meyer thrives on running the full spectrum of mezzo characters. Ms. Rabe-Meyer’s repertoire embraces the bad girls Carmen (Carmen),
Maddalena (Rigoletto) and Lola (Cavalleria
Rusticana). Her “pants roles” include the title character in
Handel’s Giulio Cesare and Humperdink’s Hansel of
Hansel and Gretel. Ms. Rabe-Meyer’s comic side takes on the roles of Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro),
Berta (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and Gilbert and Sullivan’s
characters, Little Buttercup (H.M.S. Pinafore) and Katisha
(Mikado). In 2003 Ms.
Rabe-Meyer received glowing reviews for her portrayal of loyal companion
Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) with both First Coast Opera and
Delaware Valley Opera. In 2008 Janet
Rabe-Meyer added the dramatic role of opera diva Maria
Callas to her repertoire in the Tony Award winning play Master Class produced
by First Coast Opera. She “Dominated the stage” and portrayed Callas with
“style and verve” (Erin Thursby/Entertaining U Magazine, Jacksonville, FL).
The mezzo
soprano received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Opera Performance
from the North Carolina
School of the Arts. She
sang as an apprentice artist with Sarasota Opera and the Natchez Opera
Festival. Ms. Rabe-Meyer has
performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the Karlovy Vary Symphony
and Bohuslava Martinu Filharmonic of the Czech Republic; First Coast Opera, St.
Augustine, Florida; Bach Festival of Winter Park, Florida; and Amato Opera and
Delaware Valley Opera in New York.
The 2007
season included a Handel Concert and P.D.Q. Bach concert both with the Bach
Festival of Winter Park, Florida and a Messiah Concert with members of the
Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra to aid the Jacksonville Players Association.
2008 will be busy with Maria Callas in Master Class; the Alto
Soloist in Bruckner’s Te Deum (Daytona Beach Bel Canto
Singers) and in Judas Maccabeus
(Jacksonville Masterworks Chorale); Ruth (Pirates of Penzance) with
Orlando Gilbert & Sullivan Players; Messiah (Orlando
Messiah Choral Society). In 2009 Janet
will return to South Palm Beach and the “Cy” Schonberg Concert Series.
