Rexburg Sunbirds Program History
Rexburg Sunbirds Program History

The Rexburg Sunbird program began in 1976 and was probably one of the first in this country. There are approximately 2,000 retired senior citizens (summer visitors) or Sunbirds as they are known who fill the off-campus university apartments surrounding BYU-Idaho. It offers many activities including concerts and entertainment. Rexburg is nestled in the Upper Snake River Valley of eastern Idaho at 4,865 feet in elevation. It is located in the southeast corner of Idaho, close to Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Sun Valley and many more great places to visit.

Sunbirds enjoy the warm summer days, cool summer nights, fishing, golfing, affordable housing, day trips, great sight seeing trips, etc. Click on the links to the left to see housing options, and all the things to do and sites to see.

During the 2002 summer season, there were several awards given out to the loyal Sunbirds that make the trip to Rexburg. The awards ceremony during the closing social on August 15, 2002, presented 5 Sunbirds with a special gift given by the mayor of Rexburg for over 20 years of coming to Rexburg. Recipients included Oliver and Cora Wagner (24 years), Mary Car (20 years), Jim and Maxine Hicks (21 years), Don Beader (25 years, also in the same apartment each year), and Margaret Rich (20 years).

Other gifts were also given to Sunbirds that have been coming to Rexburg for between 15 and 19 years.
