Roper Lake State Park. This year, we are combining our Thanksgiving and Christmas rallies into one big, fun holiday event. Roper Lake State Park is located in southeastern Arizona near Mount Graham. Many of us have enjoyed taking a dip in the rock-lined hot tub before camping along the lake. The lake is stocked with trout, making it a great place to catch fish. Boats are limited to small electric motors. You can also hike along the five miles of trails in the park or geocache, if that is your preference. And for first timers to this area, touring nearby Kartchner Cavern is a must. Plan on a spectacular turkey and ham dinner and bring your holiday recipes. We will continue our new tradition of giving thanks to those you feel deserving, and once again, there will be a “screw your neighbor” grab bag ($15 limit). Needless to say, we will enjoy warm and wonderful meet and greets, gatherings at the fire pit (please bring fire wood), and all the other camaraderie opportunities that come with being RVing Women. And beware of surprises; our four rally hosts are wacky women. We will also hold our annual meeting and election at this event. There will be three positions available on our Board of Directors. This is a boondocking rally. Campsites are $12/night without hookups. We must have a minimum of 10 rigs to guarantee this rate. We have reserved the Gila Group Camp. Restrooms and showers are nearby. Free sewage dump is located near the entrance to the park. There is a covered pavilion in the group area with water spigots, electricity and a grill. Cabins are also available in the Gila Group Camp. Each cabin sleeps five people and is equipped with electricity and heating/cooling, but all cooking is done outside and there is no plumbing. Beds are provided, but you must bring your own bedding. Rally hosts are Marilyn Teresi and Connie Mantis, who can be reached at (602) 377-1297 or rockinwheels@mteresi.com, and Stephanie Tisdale and Patty Ferguson, who can be reached at (818) 606-5325 or stephaniepatty@gmail.com. Please RSVP by Nov. 1. Highlands Hammock State Park. Our past experience at this popular park indicates that the park will fill up for this weekend, so make reservations early. We try to park in sites 90 to 138. Reservations are available now through Reserve America at (800) 326-3521 or online at www.reserveamerica.com. A host is needed for this rally. I-35 RV Park and Resort. Games and laughter will be scheduled each evening, but as always, these can happen at any time. We will have a happy hour each day at 4 p.m., share a potluck Friday evening, and enjoy a special Saturday evening dinner with honey baked ham provided by our rally hosts and side dishes and desserts provided by all the rest of you. Our annual meeting will follow at 6 p.m. Saturday. Things to see and do in the Waco area when we aren’t hanging out at camp include the Dr. Pepper Museum, Texas Ranger Museum, Waco Suspension Bridge and River Walk, Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the bear habitat on the Baylor campus. Campsites are $21.22 if we have 10 to 20 rigs; $20.21 if we have more than 20 rigs. For information about this resort, go to www.i35rvpark.com. Fantasy RV Tour's experienced wagonmasters are waiting to escort you across the border to visit our good friends in Mexico. They will show you through this remarkable and mysterious part of the world. You will see cave dwellings, visit historic missions and take in panoramic vistas that might take your breath away.
Your RV will be parked at a campground while you travel via first-class express train through the magnificent Copper Canyon. Copper Canyon is located in the heart of Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains and is four times larger than the Grand Canyon. Reader's Digest has named it the most dramatic train ride on earth.
You will experience an interesting mix of the modern and the ancient living side by side and stay in some of the most elegant historic hotels, including a hotel right on the rim of the canyon.
A unique highlight of this trip is an excursion to the floor of Copper Canyon. You will travel down over a mile in elevation. Early missions were established in this area of the canyon in the 1600s. Silver mining flourished here in the 1800s.
Making this caravan even more tempting are the low fuel prices in Mexico. August 2008 prices are $2.29 U.S. per gallon for diesel fuel and $2.69 U.S. for unleaded gasoline! Now pack that sombrero, and don't forget a camera—the scenery is incredible.
Tour date: Fall of 2010, following the RVW Convention. Details to be announced soon.
This tour will be exclusive to RVW members and guests. For more information or an instant reservation, call RVW tour ambassadors Joann Goldsmith and Ann Matlock at (888) 270-7281 or (866) 857-7410 or email annandjoann@aol.com. Visit our website at www.fantasyrvtours.com.
