Roper
Lake State Park is located in southeastern Arizona near Mount Graham. Many of
us have enjoyed taking a dip in the rock-lined hot tub before camping along the
lake. The lake is stocked with trout, and boats are limited to small electric
motors. You can also hike along the five miles of trails in the park or
geocache. For first timers to this area, touring nearby Kartchner Cavern is a
must.
Plan on a
spectacular turkey and ham dinner and bring your holiday recipes. We will
continue our new tradition of giving thanks to those you feel deserving, and
once again there will be a screw your neighbor grab bag ($20 limit, any theme,
no re-gifts please). Needless to say, we will enjoy warm and wonderful meet and
greets, gatherings at the fire pit (please bring fire wood), and all the
camaraderie opportunities that come with being RVing Women.
In an
effort to support those who are less fortunate, each person is being asked to
bring a non-perishable food donation. We will contact the local food bank in
Safford and make sure the food is put to good use.
In between opening grab bag presents and
sharing a holiday dinner, there is an important item on our agenda for this
rally -- our Arizona Chapter annual meeting and election will be held Saturday at
10 a.m. There will be four positions available on our board of directors.
Additional information will follow regarding the election and open positions.

RVing Women, brace yourselves as you discover the wonder, thrills and challenges of West Virginia and rafting on the New River. You will be able to choose your raft trip: the Upper New River or the Lower New River.
The Lower New River raft trip through the big water canyon will take us through scores of rapids. We will also have lots of time for surfing, swimming and river antics. A professional guide travels with each 14-foot raft. The rafts seat six to seven people. From class II warm-ups to world class IV whitewater, this trip is exciting but still suitable for adventurous first timers. A shore lunch is provided.
The Upper New River raft trip takes passengers through a mild stretch of whitewater. This is a great place to get your newbie feet wet. Small rafts of one or two people is the most enjoyed way of doing this trip. The gentle and playful waves and plenty of calm waters permit time for enjoying the scenery. We will have plenty of opportunities for swimming, bird watching, picture taking, or just plain tuning out. A shore lunch is provided.
Our campground for this four day adventure will be the New River Gorge RV Park and Campground on Milroy Grose Road in Lansing. We will be close to several quaint West Virginia towns, such as Fayetteville and Summerville. Fayetteville has been named one of the top-10 coolest small towns in the U.S. by Budget Traveler Magazine.
The days when we are not rafting will be filled with a variety of activities. These may include campfires, happy hours, horseback riding, caving, rock climbing, fishing, massage, sightseeing, shopping, kayaking, biking, hiking, paintball, ATV tours and a zip line canopy tour.
The following is our tentative agenda.
Monday: Our rally will begin with a social hour and activity (around 4 p.m.) and a meal provided by your hosts.
Tuesday: We will go into historic Fayetteville for some shopping. Expect to find wonderful examples of hand-crafted items made in West Virginia at Tamarak. Our day will also include a trip to the visitor’s center for views of the New River George and New Bridge, as well as viewing a short movie about the area. We will end the day with an optional buffet at Smokey’s On The Gorge. This restaurant is listed as a top-10 place nationwide in Food Network's Best Of the Best.

Country Village RV Park. The theme for
this rally is Anatomy of a Murder--51 Years Later. Anatomy of a Murder was filmed in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan in 1959. It was adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name
written by local attorney and State Supreme Court Justice John Voelker, using
the pen name Robert Traver.
Voelker based the story on a trial in
which he successfully defended a man accused of murder. The novel raised
questions about the insanity defense, witness coaching and the prosecution of
rape.
Otto Preminger, director of the film,
challenged censorship guidelines in a number of ways that were startling for
the time. The film was one of the first to use jazz throughout and won a Grammy
for the soundtrack by Duke Ellington. The movie starred Jimmy Stewart, Eve
Arden, Lee Remick, Kathryn Grant Crosby, George C. Scott, and Ben Gazzara.
The American Bar Association has included
this movie in its list of the twelve best trial movies of all time.
Join us for a weekend celebrating good
friends and reminiscing about this extraordinary film. If you can't arrive by
Thursday, please join us whenever you can.
On Thursday. we will have a meet and greet beginning at
5 p.m. (bring your own drink and a finger-food snack to share).
Afterwards, we will view the PBS documentary Anatomy '59: The Making of a
Classic Motion Picture.
Plan
on doing some homework before you arrive: gather some friends and watch a video
of Anatomy of a Murder.
The weekend's events will have so much more meaning if you have recently viewed
the film.
On Friday, we will enjoy a lunch at Globe
Printing, home of the historic Anatomy of a Murder Signature Wall. In 1959, the
Roosevelt Supper Club occupied the space where Globe Printing now stands. The
club basement was a popular hangout for the film folks, a place where they
could gather to be away from adoring fans and the pressures of filming. One
night, in a gesture of appreciation, cast and crew placed their autographs on
the wall. Stacey Willey, owner of Globe Printing and a collector of Anatomy
of a Murder memorabilia,
will be our host.
After lunch, we will carpool to the ÂMichigamme Museum to see displays about
the author and the filming itself. We will have dinner at Mt. Shasta Restaurant
in Michigamme. Many dancing scenes in the movie were filmed at this location.
We will carpool Saturday afternoon to Big
Bay to visit the Lumberjack Tavern, the location of the actual murder, and
Thunder Bay Inn, a restaurant/pub built by the Hollywood crew in 1959 because
the Lumberjack Tavern was too small for filming. Our itinerary will include Perkins Park where the alleged
assault took place and where the closing scenes of the movie were filmed.
Sunday will be a free day to explore on
your own. You may want to take a walking tour of downtown Ishpeming (a brochure
will be available) or stop in at the Congress Lounge and Pizza, decorated with
photos from the filming; the owner was a good fishing buddy of John Voelker's
and is an avid fan of the movie.

week before your arrival date. After that, the penalty is one night's cost.
Because of this very reasonable cancellation policy, do make a reservation if
there is any chance you might be attending.
There will be so much to do at this rally,
and we know you will want more time for sightseeing. Leave crowds of people and
traffic jams and summer's heat and humidity behind and schedule a few extra
days to explore the Upper Peninsula, or make a return visit. If you like Maine, you
will love the Western UP along Lake Superior. To find things that interest you,
see Hunt's Guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula at www.hunts-upguide.com. For

Fantasy RV Tour's experienced wagonmasters are waiting to escort you across the border to visit our good friends in Mexico. They will show you through this remarkable and mysterious part of the world. You will see cave dwellings, visit historic missions and take in panoramic vistas that might take your breath away.
Your RV will be parked at a campground while you travel via first-class express train through the magnificent Copper Canyon. Copper Canyon is located in the heart of Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains and is four times larger than the Grand Canyon. Reader's Digest has named it the most dramatic train ride on earth.
You will experience an interesting mix of the modern and the ancient living side by side and stay in some of the most elegant historic hotels, including a hotel right on the rim of the canyon.
A unique highlight of this trip is an excursion to the floor of Copper Canyon. You will travel down over a mile in elevation. Early missions were established in this area of the canyon in the 1600s. Silver mining flourished here in the 1800s.
Making this caravan even more tempting are the low fuel prices in Mexico. August 2008 prices are $2.29 U.S. per gallon for diesel fuel and $2.69 U.S. for unleaded gasoline! Now pack that sombrero, and don't forget a camera--the scenery is incredible.
