Working On The Road Opportunities There are many ways to make a living or supplement your income - not all of them are your usual "job". Use your imagination, review the skills you already have and take the opportunity to try things you've never done.
|
|
- Art & Craft Fairs
Almost 10,000 art and craft fairs take place in the U.S. each year. A guide to the show circuit is offered in a monthly publication called Sunshine Artist. There is an extensive event listing section that contains all the information you need to plan your schedule. For more information call (800) 597-2573 or write to 2600 Temple Dr., Winter Park, FL 32789-1371. The Crafts Fair Guide show reviews are written by the craftsman, not the promoters. Published quarterly in California in covers the West well, and has some national coverage. Available at PO Box 5508, Mill Valley, CA 94942. Where It's At, 7204 Bucknell Dr, Austin, TX 78723 covers Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee. Gail's Guides show listings for Washington and Oregon. Contact them at PO Box 70323, Belleveue, WA 98007. There are lots of places to work: flea markets, craft shows, car, horse, dog or cat shows, home shows, sports shows, street fairs and festivals or rodeos. Also look into Wal-Mart, Kmart or Sears - you may need particular insurance coverage and your product cannot conflict with the store's. - Campground Workers
Workamper News is the uncontested "bible" of job listings of seasonal work at campgrounds, national parks and resorts. To subscribe write to Workamper News, 201 Hiram Rd, Heber Springs, AR 72543-8747. Currently $23/6 issues. Work offered includes grounds keeping, cleaning bath houses, maintenance, registration, park management, host and other positions. Some work is salaried, some includes site and utilities only. They also list volunteer positions. Bureau of Land Management and US Corps of Engineers. BLM accepts bids for BLM hosts. The COE uses volunteers, but provides free living space and some utilities. - Camping World Embassadors
There's always a long waiting list for these jobs. Your duties include representing Camping World at campgrounds and RV events and shows. At rallies, you may sponsor a breakfast. At campgrounds, distribute catalogs. You can also work in the retail stores in promotions, such as product demos. At RV shows you'll hand out literature and catalogs and register people for drawings and you must smile a lot. No salary, but you are reimbursed for expenses. These reimbursements may cover some costs which you would normally incur in your daily RVing lifestyle, such as campground fees, partial mileage and admittance to RV shows and rallies. Camping World, PO Box 90018, Bowling Green, KY 42102. - Caravans
The major RV caravan companies hire leaders, mechanics and other staff workers. Each company has a particular payment and training system. In most cases you must take a tour and serve as an assistant of some type (tailgunner, asst. wagonmaster, etc.) before advancing to WagonMaster. A training trip at your own expense (usually reduced retail) is not unusual It's best to call each tour provider and ask for their requirements. - Care-taking Property
The Caretaker Gazette contains job openings, advice and information for property caretakers, house-sitters and landowners. $29/year. Write to Gary C. Dunn, Publisher; The Caretaker Gazette; PO Box 540, River Falls, WI 54022-0540 Email: caretaker@caretaker.org. When you are going to stay in an area for a while, opportunities can come up for informal care taking arrangements. You may stay at a manufacturing plant, trucking yard or mini-storage lot where your presence can be viewed as a form of security. You need to decide whether you are willing to park somewhere without the amenities of a campground. This will influence what arrangements you accept. Decide what chores you will perform and how many hours or days you wish to trade for your accommodations. Being flexible can open many new experiences for you. - Casinos & Riverboats
If you're going to be in one area for a while, investigate working at a local casino. There is a lot of turnover in these places. You can carry change, clean, work in food service, deal or bartend. A background check with the FBI is usually required for jobs requiring handling of money. - Christmas Tree Lots
Seasonal sales opportunities in various parts of the country. These opportunities often are listed in Workamper News. Check your local paper at least 2-3 months before Christmas. Also watch for seasonal crops like pumpkin and melons which are sold on lots, etc. - Classes
Teach crafts, exercise or dance classes, square dancing or folk dancing. Teach CPR or personal computer classes. Teach aerobics and swim exercises. Sell what you know. You can charge a moderate fee, stay healthy and have a good time in the process. - Crafts
Once a requirement for any young girl, custom afghans, lap robes, needlepoint, etc is almost a lost art. The business end of this would probably be found in designing and marketing kits or supplying materials to stitchers. The amount of time necessary to produce hand-made items is rewarding, but generally makes them not economically feasible to sell. Quilting bags, needlepoint organizers, classes, designs, books and organizers will be in demand by hobbyists. - Desktop Publishing/Web Authoring
If you have experience in producing flyers and brochures your computer allows you to be a publisher anywhere, any time. You'll need a page layout program. Web skills can be used from anywhere you have a phone or cordless modem. - Fishing
Start your own fishing tackle company, tie your own flies, design and build your own lures, make custom-made fishing rods, etc. right in your RV. Rewind line, repair reels. Sell your goods under your own private label at campsites and fishing tackle stores or by mail order. Give lessons in fly-fishing or how to find good fishing spots. - Flea Markets
The name speaks for itself. Find a product to sell, rent a table, stall or booth. Be sure to collect and pay sales tax to the appropriate authority. For information about a directory of American flea markets, send a long, SASE to The Great American Flea Market Directory, PO Box 543, Fenton, MO 63026. For California swap meets send a long SASE to Swap Meets West, 295 N Broadway #147, Santa Maria, CA 93455 (805) 928-2205. - Fund Raising
Organizations everywhere are short of money. If you have the ability to conduct a soild fund-raising project for a club, association or other organization, you'll be welcome anywhere. The Fundcraft Personalized Cookbook Program, from Fundcraft, PO Box 340, Collierville, TN 38027 (901-853-7070). Their Recipes for Success booklet will guide you through the cookbok plan. Large and small organizations have earned thousands of dollars with this simple cookbook program. - Gathering Saleable Products
Antlers & Skulls If you're in an area heavily populated with game animals don't pass up a chance to find out where they winter and pick up the shed antlers. Most scrap dealers will buy them if you're in the right area. Animal skulls that are bleached out and made into decorations are another source of cash. Paint an Indian motif on the skull. If you've the stomach for it, you can buy skulls from processing plants or butchers and boil them to remove the meat, then leave them on an ant hill to finish the clean up. Butterflies Laboratories, museums and collectors all over the world buy butterflies and bugs. Catch them in the wild or raise them. Check your local library or bookstore for resources. Nature Crafts These are crafts that utilize things like driftwood, pine cones, tree roots, moss, seeds, nuts, acorns, leaves, feathers, dried flowers, etc. Indian replicas sell well. An attractive hang tag telling about you and your craft is a must. There should be a story behind each item. Sell through galleries or at flea markets. Rocks, Gems and other pretty stones A rock polisher, saw and other lapidary equipment can produce beautiful stones for jewelry and decoration that can be sold at Flea Markets and Craft shows. Wildcrafting Wildcrafters usually travel all over the country visiting areas where various herbs and roots are ready to harvest. Look in the yellow pages for herb and root buyers. One good seller is long-leafed white sage. You can bundle up a few leaves, tie them with colorful yarn and sell for a few dollars at new age shops, etc. Sage is smudged to remove bad vibes. Many other related items are popular, especially aromatics. A good plant identification book with pictures should be helpful. In the process of wildcrafting you also may find various "weeds" to add to your diet.
- Guns
Buy and sell out of your RV. Sell at flea markets or add to your own collection. Be aware of changing legal requirements in each state. Teach a class. - Health Care
Several national registries are available to match the needs of medical facilities with those of your preference of state, specialty and periods of availability. This list of health care registries was gathered through a physical therapy publication. It is not complete for nurses, respiratory therapists, etc. but will give you a starting point. Allied Connections, 800-438-8722; Cross Country (Nurses, RTs, X-Ray & Lab Techs) 800-567-5416; General Health Care Resources (Nurses), 800-879-4471; Health First Management, 800-447-8488; Health Tour, 800-727-8592; Human Resources (Nurses), 800-610-6565; National Care Resources (Nurses, RTs), 800-858-1925; Premier Health Staff, 800-995-8001; TherAmerica, 800-529-4828, Therapists, 800-733-9354; Travel Care, 800-227-0223; Traveling Professionals, 800-717-8233; TSG, 800-992-3032.
- Jewelry, Beadwork, Sculpture
Inventory and tools are easy to carry in an RV and you can hit the shows as you travel. Earrings are the most popular jewelry item, followed by matching sets of necklace, bracelet and earrings. Beadwork and jewelry made from shells and nature are popular. Jeweled buttons or button covers are also good. Candle sculptures are created individually and can be made without molds for little cost. Each is unique and can be priced according to the market demand. - Lock & Key
Needless to say, a locksmith's services are always in demand. Just hang out your shingle and you're in business at any campsite. Often combined with scissor/knife sharpening services. - Membership Recruitment
Family Travel Trailer Association (FTTA) pays referral fees for new nembers. If you persuade a campground to join FTTA as a commercial member, you get a $25 referral fee. For every individual who joins from that campground (brochures are placed there with your name) you receive an additional $5. The dealer program referral fee is $150 for each dealer signed up and $5 for each new member from the dealer. The dealer will be buying a membership for each person he sells a trailer to, if that person chooses to belong. There also is a fee for setting up local chapters. For more details, contact Bob and Ellen Brockes at 453 Oak Cove Rd, Titusville, FL 32780 or call 800-603-1101, ask for Bob. You should own a 5th wheel or travel trailer. - Metal Detecting/Gold Panning
There is hidden treasure everywhere. Not necessarily a vein of gold in the Superstitions but lost jewelry, coins, watches etc. can be found. Not quite as high tech as metal detecting, panning for gold is fun and you can find enough to pick up a few dollars in the process. Check your yellow pages for suppliers and ore buyers. - Mobile Sign Shop
In order to provide "drive-up" services to customers, you will need space in your RV for working tools, storage, space to make up signs, etc. - Multi-Level and Network Marketing
Many of these sales programs and recruiting products are marketed on a multi-level plan and many of the products are in high demand. How do you go about deciding if an opportunity is a legal marketing program or an illegal pyramid scheme? The major difference is in how money is made. If the primary earnings are commissions on selling a product, it is a marketing plan. If the focus is on bringing others into the organization, and if the recruit is required to pay a fee to join, then it could be classified as a pyramid scheme. It's probably a good idea to check with a legal authority before becoming involved in any plan. - Nannies, Companions, Estate Workers
Heartland Caregivers is a registry for worldwide placement of live-in nannies, chefs, couples for estates, companions to elderly, etc. You must have references and pass a health check. A criminal, driving and other reports will be investigated before you can be hired. Contact PO Box 9237, 5500 Grant Creek Rd, Missoula, MT 59807, (406) 542-0241 Fax (406) 549-7304. (1994 reference - check if still valid!) - National Forest Service
California Land Management is under contract to the US Forest Service and manage many campgrounds in the California and Nevada. Salary paid is according to what job classification you have. They use reservations clerks, patrol persons, general repair and maintenance work. Uniforms are supplied. This company also manages campgrounds in Oregon and Washington under the name of Northwest Land Management. Contact both companies at 675 Gilman St., Palo Alto, CA 94301, 415-322-1181. Pyramid Enterprises, Inc., PO Box 249, Piru, CA 93040 offers host positions in Colorado, Montana, Arizona, Wyoming and California. Some year-round. 800-416-6992. - National Park Concessionaires
For example, Yellowstone National Park: Hamilton Stores, Inc. are the concessionaires for 14 general stores. They employ sales clerks, grocery clerks, cooks and servers, custodians, security guards, dorm supervisors, etc. The main season is May-September, but they accept arrival dates as late as August. You must be 19 years of age or older, have a neat, well-groomed appearance, be willing to serve all guests; and be flexible. There is a processing/ security deposit required with your employment agreement. Employees staying in the RV park are charged a reasonable fee plus electricity per day and all occupants must work for Hamilton Stores, Inc. Participation in the Park medical plan is a condition of employment and it carries a per day charge as well as a charge for any actual medical service. See NPS concessionaires list, below. - Outfitters
Travelers don't know where to find that good fishing hole or canoeing spot. You can show them. Rafting, backpacking, horseback excursions, dirt bike treks and gold panning trips can be a great way to get into the back country and get paid for it. Bird watching, wildlife photography tours. Check for local licensing requirements. - Pet Grooming
Many of us spend more on our pets than our family. Put together a portable grooming service and you can do a consistent business everywhere you go. - RV Detailing (Wash, wax, fine detail work)
A small investment in waxes, cleaners, etc and pride in your work will bring a satisfying way to pick up extra money. - RV Service
The over 9 million RVs on the road today need trained service people to keep them in good repair. Manufacturers, dealers and suppliers also need trained and knowledgeable representatives. RVIA, Camping World and Lazy Daze offer training programs for RV service technicians. Camping World makes its employee instruction course available to the public at Camping World University. You may enroll for the entire eight week course or choose specific units within the course. Students may choose to earn manufacturer certification after successfully completing a training module. Product-specific courses target furnaces, refrigerators, plumbing fixtures, etc. These are conducted by industry experts. Clinics are held in various cities for about $250 each. For information on Trouble Shoot Clinics contact RVIA at (703) 620-6003 ext. 355.Correspondence Courses consist of 10 self-paced learning packages with more than 600 pages of instruction, diagrams, worksheets, practical experiences, training videos and industry publications. See end of resource list for current locations. - Sales
There is virtually no limit to what you can sell while on the road, but some products lend themselves to the traveler more than others: Site Plan Masterboards are custom designed redwood signs that are placed in campgrounds, free of charge to the campground. They are large signs placed at entrances of parks. The signs are supported by advertisers in the community. You receive a commission, and the park provides a free site for the rep while the ads are being sold. A deposit for the sales kit may be required. Some employers: American Guide Services PO Box 790, Port Angeles, WA 98362, 800-245-9666; Redwood Graphics, 3817 S. Alameda St. Suite A, Corpus Christi, TX 78411 - 512-857-2666. Wheeler's Campground Guide assigns territories for commission sales of advertising to dealers and campgrounds. You also update park listings for the Wheelers Guides. Vehicle manufacturers often hire reliable drivers to drive their units across country for delivery to dealers and RV shows. The newer companies that insure against illness away from home often guarantee the return of a persons RV - they also could utilize drivers with a clean driving record. Don't forget the snowbirds in your community who may not be physically able to drive their RV to their usual seasonal location. - Windshield and Glass Repair
Learning to repair chips and cracks in glass is fairly easy and requires a small cash outlay. Rock chip breaks are small cracks, usually in the top layer of glass. You open the crack, get the air out and fill the crack with clear resin. You then harden the resin with UV light or sunlight, clean up the glass and collect your fee. More information is available from Dick Ling, PO Box 19314 San Diego, CA 92159 (800-583-0869 or 619-460-0124) - Writing/Editing
Run your writing business right out of your RV. Write about your travels, the people you meet, the interesting places you visit. Own your RV, travel and legitimately write off the expenses. A laptop computer is ideal for this type of life. See the Writer's Digest for lists of publications that buy freelance work. - National Parks (NP) Concessionaires
