Religion Classes are Teaching the Faith!

In a statement of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Bishops renewed their commitment to Catholic Schools:

These Catholic schools afford the fullest and best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Christian education, namely to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced, service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship of God is cultivated.

Students at St. Paul's are studying many aspects of the Catholic faith.

  • In the primary grades, students are learning about worship, are creating prayer spots where they can quietly talk to God, and talking about the saints, especially patron saints.
  • Students in second grade are prayerfully preparing for First Reconciliation.
  • Students in grades four and five are engaged in creating gift bags for the Samaritan's Table at St. John's Catholic Church in Canton.
  • Fourth graders received new bibles, blessed by Fr. Jay Clarke, which they will keep and use in Religion classes through 8th grade. They will soon be learning about the Beatitudes.
  • St. Paul middle school students begin each Religion class by saying a decade of the rosary.
    • They are studying Abraham, our father in faith in 6th grade.
    • Seventh grade students are delving deeper into the twelve apostles and Mary.
    • Students in the 8th grade are learning about the four marks of the Catholic Church.

OCSAA Goal Puts a Focus on Respect and Responsibility

As part of an Ohio Catholic School Accreditation goal, the Saint Paul School community will participate in activities which focus on respect and responsibility. Teachers, students and parents will utilize prayer, retreat opportunities, guest speakers and the arts to broaden their understanding of their responsibilities as Catholics. Tolerance for the elderly, handicapped, and people of different races and faith traditions, as well as, mutual respect will be a focus.

Students understand they have a responsibility to care for themselves, others and the environment. Through journaling, a study of the virtues, and the sacraments, students will be able to deepen their understanding of their responsibilities as Catholics in their school and world communities.

The respect and responsibility goal will go beyond current bullying programs and character education. Four key elements: morality/values, community, mission and service, will be the central focus of this goal.

Teachers responsible for deciding goal strategies have used current literature and studies as they plan for this goal. Some ideas include studying the virtues and how they relate to students lives, discussion time in Religion classes, drama club presentations, continued community service opportunities , speakers for religious tolerance, and community events celebrating achievement and school spirit.
