The mission of North Star is to prevent students from dropping out of school and to recover students who have dropped out by:
working directly with students and families in order to attain a meaningful education and a satisfying career
building our schools' and communities' capacity to engage and retain students at the margin
being a repository for new thinking on dropout prevention and recovery
Dropping out of school is a problem with living, not a pathology
Problems with living are often best addressed within the environment in which they arose
Problems with living result from a mismatch between the unique characteristics of an individual and the settings in which the individual finds himself or herself.
Encouragement is a fundamental to releasing a student's imagination and creativity in order to negotiate a successful education and career
