Instructions for the Search Engine Tools

The search engine tools will be used to promote your site to the world. When people go to any search engine looking for a product or service, they type in keywords to get a list of pages that cover the desired information. If you want people to find your site, services, or products, you need first to set META Tags to the pages which you want found in search engines. Click Here to learn more about the "META Tags". After entering useful and effective META tags, you can then go to the Promotion Tools, click on Search Engine Tools, and click the 'Go' button. This gives you a page that shows the following:

Title Edit Delete Submit

Here you may see a list of pages, or just 'Main Page'. The Title of the page is for your use only. Give each page a useful title name so that you can keep track of what is on each page. (It would be smart to use page names that are also useful and explanatory.)

We begin by submitting your index page to a search engine. This is the page named 'Main Page'. This is the first page people will see when they type in your URL. Click on the 'Edit' button. You will see a page asking for a title and a URL. Currently there will be a 'Main Page' for the title, and an 'index.html' for the URL. This information is for your use only. Click on the 'Submit' button, and then the 'Back' button. This brings you back to the list, (perhaps short list) of pages.

If you have a page that is not yet listed here, click on the 'Add a Page' button. This will also ask for a Title and a URL. Type in the title of the page that you are adding. This can be anything, and is for your use only. However, we suggest that you use useful, meaningful names. After entering the title of that page, type in the page name with the extension. Then click the 'Submit' button and then the 'Back' button. You can continue to add pages to this list.

When you are done adding, we will be at the list (perhaps short list) of pages. We will now submit your index page to one of the search engines. Click on the 'Submit to Search Engines' button next to 'Main Page.' This will give you the following:

Search Engine Visit Submit Submit Date Update Date
AltaVista Visit Submit URL |Update Now|

These are currently, the top 13 search engines. If you wish to visit the site of any of these search engines, you can click on the 'Visit' link. This opens another browser window (sometimes using one that is currently open), and takes you straight to the homepage of the search engine.

To submit your page, click on the 'Submit URL' link of the search engine that you want to submit to. This will also open another browser window. The window will open to the page on the search engine that you will use to submit the URL of your page. Follow the search engine instructions for submitting your page. Each search engine may be a bit different. See the end of this paper for information about Yahoo. Be sure to use the EXACT URL of your page. Remember that the URL is case sensitive for the ID numbers and the page names (i.e.. D3000002/X300002). If you are using a domain name, you can type http://domainname.com/pagename.html. Be sure to add the .html extension. After submitting your URL to the search engine, you can close the browser window that opened for you. Again you will see the 'Submit to Search Engines' page.

You will now want to click on the 'Update Now' button to place the current date in the 'Submit Date'. (The posted date comes from our servers.) This feature is used to keep track of the last time that you submitted the page to a search engine. Some search engines are a little picky on how many times you submit a page. It is a good idea to contact the search engine for information about the way they do their searches.

After you have added all of the pages that you want to submit to the search engines, and after you have submitted each of these pages to the search engines, you are then completely set to have your pages brought up in searches. Each search engine gives information concerning the amount of time it takes to begin coming up on searches, but generally it will take between 4 days and 4 weeks. See each search engine for their own information. You can also find out from the search engines what else you can do to have your page come up better. You will now want to see the promotion tools 'EZ-Link Trader'.

Yahoo is different in the fact that you must submit your page to categories. When you click on the 'Submit URL' link next to Yahoo, it will bring up a browser window for Yahoo. You will need to read the instructions carefully (they can be confusing), and go through their listing of categories until you find the category that you want your page to be under.
