Virginia May Woodburn
Virginia May Woodburn, 100, of Selah died Monday, June 30 at Riverview Manor.

Mrs. Woodburn was born in Mosley Junction, Va. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Dean Woodburn of Selah and Jerry Woodburn of Yakima; a daughter, Virgie Ricker of Lacey, Wash.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

At the family's request, there will be no services.

Zachary Walter Rilea
Zachary Walter Rilea, 15, of Union Gap, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008.

Zach was born March 8, 1993 in Yakima. He attended Union Gap School and was a member of DeMoley.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara Martinez and his step-father, Robert Martinez, both of Union Gap, his father, Steven Wester and his step-mother, Angela May, both of Yakima; a brother, Karl Offerdahl of Chewelah WA; a sister, Heather Marie Rilea of Pekin, IL, and her son, Xasnder Lee Rilea; grandparents, Nancy Dutcher of Moxee, Phyllis Westin of Spokane, and Ignacio and Ignasia Martinez of Parker, WA; and a great-grandmother, Mary Dutcher of Yakima.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, July 6 from 1 until 5 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 1, 2008 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Yakima.
Gladys Neoma Poindexter
Gladys Neoma Poindexter, 71, of Selah died Thursday, June 26.

Mrs. Poindexter was born in Ava, Mo. She worked on farms in the Northwest and lived in Yakima on and off for many years.

Survivors include two sons, David Poindexter of Yakima and Mark Poindexter of Twentynine Palms, Calif.; six brothers, Milford Maggard, Wayne Maggard, Michael Maggard and Wally Maggard, all of Modesto, Calif., Donald Maggard of Turlock, Calif., and Bollie Maggard of Summerville, S.C.; a sister, Kay Lamance of Selah; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services.

Ethel Phay Robey Taylor
Ethel Phay Robey Taylor, 93, of Yakima died Thursday, June 26 at Summitview Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Taylor was born in Hermiston, Ore. She worked for the Government Census Bureau in Washington, D.C.; for Kaiser Ship Yard in Vancouver, Wash., during World War II; and for 17 years with Bayly Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Schrock of Yakima, and one grandchild.

Natalie Celia Nunez-Rodriguez
Natalie Celia Nunez-Rodriguez, two-day old infant daughter of Lizbeth Nunez-Rodriguez and Ricardo Rodriguez, died Wednesday, June 25 at Sunnyside Community Hospital.

In addition to her parents, survivors include a sister, Elaine Nunez-Rodriguez; and her grandparents, Librada Rivera, Julio Dardon, Teresa Rodriguez and Raul Solis.

Viewing will be at 5 p.m. today, June 26 at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Sunnyside, with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow in Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.

Adam Albert Jr.
Adam Albert Jr., 78, of Yakima, passed away Wednesday June 25, 2008 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Adam was born to Adam and Doris (Morford) Albert on November 16, 1929. Adam served in the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas. Adam was a lifelong mechanic and truck driver.

Adam (Junior) was a true cowboy at heart. He enjoyed the outdoors, he was full of life and enjoyed life to the fullest, and he enjoyed camping with his CB buddies. Adam also loved music and liked to sing karaoke. He also enjoyed driving his antique cars in all the different parades. When he wasn’t outdoors he liked watching his John Wayne movies. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Adam was preceded in death by his parents Adam and Doris Albert; his wife of many years, Donna; his infant grandson Dakota; his sister Dorothy Meadows; his step-sister Liz Weizorack, and his long-time companion Anna Delp.

Adam is survived by his son Robert Albert, his companion Shannon Weeks and three granddaughters Kathy, Debbie and Jessica, all of Yakima; his two brothers Jim (Doris) Albert of Yakima; Terry (Gloria) Albert of Greenville, NC; three sisters, Violet (Charlie) Johnson of Moline, IL; Goldie Sapp of Orlando, FL and Linda Sandall of Yakima; also three step-brothers, Erman (Sarah) Evans of Orlando, FL, Bill Evans of Alexander City AL, and Marvin Evans of Seattle, WA, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the caregivers who looked after Adam and to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital for their special care.

Delmar Warren France
Delmar Warren France, 85, of Selah died Tuesday, June 24 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mr. France was born in Yakima. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a longtime employee of the General Electric Test Reactor before moving to the Marketing Group where he was manager of customer services for the Radio Isotopes Business.

Survivors include his wife, M. Jean France of Selah; a son, Daniel France of Hayward, Calif.; a daughter, Judy Delashaw of Selah; and two grandchildren.

At his request there will be no services.

Jack Junior Schaneman
Jack Junior Schaneman, 65, of Sunnyside died Monday, June 23 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Schaneman was born in Hardin, Mont. He worked as a heavy equipment operator at Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District. He lived in Sunnyside for 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Rod Schaneman of Tri-Cities; a daughter, Lisa Dixon-Floyd of Yakima; two brothers, Don Schaneman and Frank Schaneman, both of Sunnyside; and three grandchildren.

Graveside memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 27 at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

Charlotte Theone Shockley
Charlotte Theone Shockley, 73, of Zillah died Friday, June 20 in Kennewick.

She was born in Sunnyside. She was a mother and homemaker.

Survivors include her mother, Pauline Shockley of Outlook; a son, Joseph Callahan; six daughters, Barbara Quinlan, Gail Sauve, Patricia Hatley, Paula Passmore, Colleen Boyer and Carla Miller; a sister, Marlene Skeen of Outlook; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Virginia Maxine Pease
Virginia Maxine Pease, 76, of Outlook, WA passed away Friday, June 20, 2008 with her family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ginny was born January 27, 1932 in Columbus, Mt, the daughter of Frank and Ruby (Dobbs) Kearney.

Ginny attended Lone Tree School in Stillwater County until the family moved to the Yakima Valley in 1943. She continued her education in the Sunnyside schools, graduating with the Class of 1950.

Virginia married Dale Pease in 1951. Together they had 3 sons, Joel, Don, and Kerry who were the highlight of her life.

She farmed, worked at various food processors, was a homemaker and loved her flowers. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Sunnyside.

Ginny is survived by her sons, Joel (Sheryl) Pease of Belfair, WA, Don (Lorrie) Pease of Issaquah, WA, and Kerry (Cheryl) of Cheney, WA, her grandchildren Kasey, Logan, Kinsey, Jessica, and Rylie. She is also survived by her brother Ken (Shirley) Kearney, sisters Mary Lou (Ernie) Ribail, Ethel Porter and sister in-law Leona Kearney of Sunnyside, WA, Bobbie Taylor, Geraldine (Clayton) Klippert of Spokane and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and a brother, Duane Kearney.

Curtis Allen Speak
Curtis Allen Speak, 65, of Naches died Friday, June 20 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Speak was born in Calico Rock, Ark. He worked as a truck driver and a volunteer firefighter.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Speak of Naches; a daughter, Melissa Speak of Naches; and a sister, Glenabelle Melton of Moxee.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 28 at the United Christian Church, 317 S. 41st St.

Rosemary Henness-Evans, 69, of Yakima died Wednesday, June 18.

Mrs. Henness-Evans was born in Dickenson, N.D. She worked as a retail sales clerk.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Henness of Bonney Lake, Wash., Jeff Henness of Seattle; a brother, Robert Hartinger of Kettle Falls, Wash.; three sisters, Doris Albert of Yakima, Shirly Braymiller of Florida and Linda Luedtke of Portland; and four grandchildren.

Raoul Lopez, 67, of Toppenish died Tuesday, June 17.

Mr. Lopez was born in El Salto Jalisco, Mexico. He resided in Toppenish for 40 years and worked as a farm laborer.

Survivors include his wife, Esmeralda Lopez of Toppenish; a son, Raul Lopez of Toppenish; three daughters, Sylvia Lopez of Toppenish, Delia Lopez of Yakima and Michelle Lopez of Leavenworth, Wash.; three brothers, Leopoldo Lopez and George Lopez of Toppenish and George Zepeda of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Richard Leroy Turvey
Richard Leroy Turvey, 66, of Yakima died Monday, June 16 at home.

Mr. Turvey was born and raised in Yakima and served in the Army for 20 years. Upon returning to Yakima, he was a self-employed auto mechanic.

Survivors include a daughter, Tanya Kallenberger of Meridian, Idaho; a stepson, Ron Febus, and a stepdaughter, Donna Mullins, both of Yakima; a brother, James Turvey of Yakima; two sisters, Marjorie Switzer of Yakima and Patricia Turvey of Spokane; and one grandchild.

Margaret Theresa DeRuyter
OUTLOOK - Margaret Theresa (Bettencourt) DeRuyter was born on March 23, 1941 in Artesia, California and passed away peacefully at home in Outlook, WA on June 13, 2008.

She will be deeply missed and is survived by her husband, George DeRuyter, sons, Stephen (Sharon) DeRuyter of Pasco, WA, Robert (Angela) DeRuyter of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Dan (Amber) DeRuyter of Outlook, WA, Tom (Penny) DeRuyter of Spokane, WA, and George (Abbie) DeRuyter of Renton, WA. She had eleven grandchildren (Donna, Clint, Mark, Hannah, Gerrit, Jaymin, Brenden, Tristan, Lauren, Emma, and Kathryn) as well as a brother Jack Bettencourt of Orange, CA, sisters, Rita Spelliscy of Orange, CA, Ethel Moons of Edmonds, WA, Mary McConnell of San Antonio, TX, and Helen Purdy of Chino, CA, and many nieces and nephews.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, and niece. Margaret's grandchildren were her great joy. She was a partner in their farm for many years and very active with the Yakima Valley Dairy Women. She was a volunteer for the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and an active member of Resurrection Catholic Church. Margaret was noted for her compassion and generosity in helping those in need.

Margaret had a year and a half battle with brain cancer. She will be missed and continued to be loved by all who knew her.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Bella Bettencourt and her grandfather, Domingos E. Veiga.

Visitation will be at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A Rosary Vigil Service will be held at Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Yakima.
H. Mark Mulford
H. Mark Mulford, 59, of Sunnyside died Thursday, June 12.

Mr. Mulford was born in Yakima. He served in the Army in Korea. He then worked 13 years for Valley Processing in Sunnyside.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Mulford of Sunnyside; his father, Harold Mulford of Sunnyside; his mother, Dorothy Bedard of Yakima; a daughter, Nicole Medina of Sunnyside; a son, James Mulford of Sunnyside; two sisters, Lacy McMillon of Yakima and Sheri Coder of Sunnyside; four brothers, Dean Clease of Blaine, Wash., Paul Mulford of Spokane, Kevin Mulford of Moses Lake and Marty Mulford of South Dakota; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 17 at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Sunnyside. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.

Cecil S. Watts
YAKIMA – Cecil S. Watts, 79, of Yakima, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008 in Yakima.

Cecil was born Oct. 4, 1928 in St. Joe Arkansas to Monroe J. and Alta (Steele) Watts. He Married Daphne D. Hiles August 24, 1946 in Yakima. Together, they made their home in Yakima. Cecil worked many years for Yakima Transit as a bus driver.

He was a member of the Christian Life Center of Yakima where he served as a board member. He was best known for his dedication to family and his faithful daily prayers for them.

He is survived by his loving wife, Daphne; a son, Rick D. Watts; three daughters, Sharon (Monty) Neumeyer, Char (Steve) Wood and Renee (Wade) Casady, all of Yakima; three sisters, Euna Baker of Arkansas, Bonnie Rowans and Eula May Baker of Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Delmar Johnson
YAKIMA - Delmar Johnson was born on December 31, 1937 in Williston, ND to Ralph and Ida May (Kerbal) Johnson and passed away on June 10, 2008 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Yakima, Washington. He spent his early years in Williston, moving to Kalispell, Montana when he was 15. He joined the Army at 17 and served 12 years with the 101st Airborne Division. After leaving the Army he eventually settled in Omaha, Nebraska, where he raised his family and worked for the U.S. Postal Service until retirement. After retiring he lived in Arizona for a short time, finally moving to Washington in 1985. He lived in Selah for several years and in 1998 he met Diana. They were married in June 2006.

He looked forward to hunting season and the time spent with his many friends. He loved fishing and camping, and he especially enjoyed card games and spent many evenings playing pinochle, gin and cribbage with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Diana, three sons, Dean of Omaha NE, Doug (Maryann) of Thornton, CO and Brad of San Diego, CA; three daughters, Sandy Harvey of Nashville, TN, Carol (Tim) Ramsell of Bellevue NE and Suzanne Farrier of Indianapolis; two brothers, Lester of Seattle and Lyle (Sandy) of Spokane; one sister, Bonnie (Larry) Bartlette of Selah; his nephew Todd (Linnet) Brown, and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Corky and Jerry.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Virgil Allen
Virgil Lee Allen, 71, of Yakima died Tuesday, June 10.

Mr. Allen was born in Kansas City, Mo., and came to Yakima in 1951. He served one year in the Marine Reserves and four years in the Air Force. He drove trucks between Yakima and Alaska, worked for Chinook Camper (Mayor & Sons), One-Hour Martinizing and Boise Cleaners.

Survivors include his mother, Pearlie Matthews of Port Angeles, Wash.; three daughters, Debra Wadsworth of Sutherland, Ore., Karen Allen of Austin, Texas, and Susan McIntyre of LaMesa, Calif.; a halfbrother, Monte R. Matthews of Port Angeles; a halfsister, Ruby Hiles of St. Joseph, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no services.
Jean Sakae Iwami
Jean Sakae Iwami, 88, of Grandview died Saturday, June 7 at Orchard House.

Mrs. Iwami was born in Oahu, Hawaii. She spent her childhood in Hawaii and Japan. He lived her adult life in Lombard, Ill., Las Vegas and Grandview.

Survivors include four sons, Steve Iwami of Bellevue, Bill Iwami of Lombard, Ill., Russ Iwami of Wheaton, Ill. and Gene Iwami of Grandview; four grandchildren.

Family memorial services will be held later this summer.

Eugene Franklin Butler
Eugene Franklin Butler, 85, of Yakima died Saturday, June 7 in Goldendale.

Mr. Butler was born in Okfuske County, Okla. He served in the Army. He worked for the Forest Service, building roads, bidding and working on equipment.

Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Shuman and Kimberley Butler, both of Yakima; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Ronald Franklin Davis
Ronald “Ron” Franklin Davis passed away June 6th, 2008. Ron was born to
Bill and Dell Davis on March 8th, 1948, in Yakima, Washington. He was raised in Naches and spent his entire life in the community he loved.

Whenever possible Ron could be found in his beloved mountains hunting for mushrooms. His love of the mountains began at an early age hiking with his grandfather, father and brother. He treasured any opportunity to take his dog Angel on a drive to Timber Wolf Lookout.

Ron’s life could be defined as love for family and friends, good and bad jokes and the telling of elaborate stories. He will be remembered for how hard he laughed, and how much he cared for those close to him.

His greatest joy was his daughter Kay and his grandson Ben. Whenever Ron wasn’t bragging about Kay he was telling stories about Ben. He was always eager to teach Ben about nature, how to whittle, and time-tested ways to tell the same stories over and over again.

He is survived by his daughter Barbara “Kay” Crowley, son-in-law, Mike Crowley, and grandson Benjamin Davis Crowley of Spokane, WA; his sister Lenita “Jane” Parris, brother-in-law, Len Parris and their daughter, Meghan Parris of Woodinville, WA; and his brother Bill G. Davis, sister-in-law, Patty Davis and their daughters Erin and Sara Davis of Santa Barbara, CA.

There will be a void in the town Naches without Ron. He will be dearly missed by those who were touched by him. He was loved, respected and enjoyed by all who had the opportunity to know him and call him friend.

At Ron’s request, there will be no formal services, but there will be an informal reception to celebrate Ron’s time with us at the Apple Cart Deli in downtown Naches on Sunday, June 8th, 2 to 4 pm. All of Ron’s friends are welcome to attend.

Instead of flowers, Ron and his family would prefer that any memorials be given to the Naches Fire Department.
Juanita Aurelia Sugarman
Juanita Aurelia Sugarman, 93, of Ellensburg died Saturday, June 7 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Sugarman was born in La Grande, Ore., and worked as a grocery store clerk. Survivors include two sons, Ken of Tieton and David of Lacey, Wash.; two daughters, Sarah Hires of LaCenter, Wash., and Joann Herrien of Portland; a sister Barbara Herrien of Portland; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Joseph Teslo
Joseph Teslo, 4, of Zillah died Tuesday, June 3.

Joseph was born in Fairbanks, Alaska. His family is originally from Russia and has lived in the valley for three years. He loved to play with rocks and marbles, riding his bike and playing with his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his father and mother, Sergey Teslo and Nadezhda Teslo; brothers, Benjamin Teslo, Dennis Teslo, Roman Teslo, Ruuvim Teslo and Eric Teslo; and sisters, Anetta Teslo, Emma Teslo, Violetta Teslo, Evalena Teslo, Margarita Teslo, Elvira Teslo and Angelica Teslo, all of Zillah.

Vigil service will be at 6 p.m. today, June 5 in the Zillah Church of the Nazarene. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7 in the Old German Baptist Brethren Church in Ellensburg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Iva Van Horn
GRANDVIEW - Iva Van Horn, 91, of Grandview, went to be with her Lord on June 2nd, 2008 at her home in Grandview.

Iva was born June 9, 1916, in Cohasset, Minn. to John and Ellen (Scales) Van Patter. In January 1917 the family moved to Outlook, Washington. They later moved to their home on Independence Rd.

Iva attended school at Independence Grade School, Outlook and Granger High Schools and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1935. After high school Iva returned to Sunnyside where she met George Van Horn, and they were married September 6, 1936. During the next 30 years Iva and George were in the grocery business and farming in the Yakima Valley.

Iva is survived by 6 children: Marjorie Rank (Yakima), Ron (Valerie) Van Horn (Portland), Linda Wertenberger (Kennewick), Gloria (Doug) Hall (Grandview), Gary (Sally) Van Horn (Haymarket, VA), and Mary Ann (Mike) Sauve (Grandview), and 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Iva was a member of the Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church where she was active in the Brethren Church Quilting Circle. Iva won many awards during her years of quilting. She made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.

During her years of employment she worked at Stokely's Inc. and Libby's Inc.

She was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents John and Ellen Van Patter; brothers, Mark, Leonard and Winton Van Patter and sisters Nettie Dexter, Mary Kinkade, Phoebe Johnson, Amy Herin and Effie Lay.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory may contribute to Lower Valley Hospice.

Stanley Claire Sainsbury
YAKIMA - Stanley Claire Sainsbury, 86, of Sunnyside, passed away June 1, 2008 in Yakima, Wash. Stanley was born to Ben Sainsbury and Welhelmina (Carlson) Sainsbury on Aug. 11, 1921 in Union, Utah.

He was raised in the Rexburg, Idaho area most of his youth and attended schools in Rexburg and Yakima.

Stan served in the United States Navy as a Boswains mate from 1940-1946, seeing action in the South Pacific during WWII.

In 1942 he married Geneva Cook in San Francisco, Calif. They were blessed with twin girls Norma Gene and Nancy Gale. Stan and Geneva divorced in 1944.

Stan married Iris Stump in 1945 in Caldwell, Idaho. Stan and Iris had three sons: Clary, Phil and Lyle. Over the years they made their home in Prosser, Ephrata, Toppenish and Zillah. In 1978 Iris was diagnosed with Alzheimers and passed away in 1987. Stan worked 11 years for the Toppenish Police Department and 30 years for the Regulation Division of the State Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1984.

Stan married Erma Graff in 1987 in Boise, Idaho and made their home in Zillah. Stan and Erma enjoyed many trips and adventures together during their marriage, including annual winter stays in Quartzsite, Ariz. with other trips around the United States.

Stan was a long-time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having held many positions including high priest and scout master. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Erma Sainsbury of Sunnyside, Clary Stanley Sainsbury of Spokane, Phillip Markus Sainsbury of Murray, Utah, Lyle Ray Sainsbury of Moses Lake, daughters Gale Grady and Gene McElree, both of Omaha Neb., stepsons Tim Graff and wife Sherri of Outlook and Dick Graff and wife Sandy of Othello, 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, and one brother Eldon Sainsbury of Las Vegas, Nev. Stanley is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Iris (Stump) Sainsbury, six brothers, and four sisters.

Viewing will take place Friday, June 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at the Sunnyside Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Burial will follow at Zillah City Cemetery in Zillah under the direction of Valley Hills Funeral Home.

Trager McKelroy
YAKIMA - Trager McKelroy, 89, of Wapato, passed away Monday, June 2, 2008 at Crescent Health Care in Yakima.

Trager was born April 7, 1919 in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, to Arthur and Minnie McKelroy. He served in the U.S. Army, then lived and worked on farms in Wapato for many years.

He is survived by his very special friends James and Roberta Wilson of Wapato. At his request, there will be no formal services.
