Maria Guillermina Guzman
Guillermina Guzman of Wapato passed away Monday, Sept. 7, 2009. She was born to Carmen and Adelberto Vargas on April 2, 1927 in Urapan, Mexico.

In 1928 she migrated to the United States settling in Eagle Pass, Texas. She migrated to the Yakima Valley during the 1940’s and in 1943 she married Francisco Jimenez and was widowed in 1946. In 1951 she married Gumecindo Guzman and settled in the Wapato area in 1952.

She worked as a farm laborer. Later she dedicated her time to caring for her grandchildren. She taught them her art of cooking, especially her delicious tortillas and her traditional tamales. She also loved sewing and caring for her flower garden. During most of her life she overcame many serious health issues especially her loss of vision and continued to live a full life. She was a lifelong member of the Wapato Guadalapana Guild.

Above all she led by example, her strong belief of the Catholic faith and family unity.

She is survived by her sons, Joe (Virginia) Guzman Jr. of Wapato and Enrique (Felicidad) Guzman of Wapato; daughters, Carmen (Ismael) Mancilla of Toppenish, Guillermina (Daniel) Vijarro of Toppenish, Rosa (Robert) Fraga of Grandview, and Isabel (Frank) Jaime of Wapato; brothers, Alfredo (Anita) Vargas of Wapato and Salvador Vargas Jr. of Arizona; sister, Emma Gamboa of Wapato; and 24 grandchildren, Gabriel and Ismael Mancilla, Victoria Lopez, Rufino, Ana, Henry Jr., Rena, Angel Guzman, Melanie Hines, Connie Birrnuerta, Dominique, Heraclio, Dorothea Vijarro, Joe III and Miguel Guzman, Esteban and Aaron Pena, Sonya and Bobby Fraga, Nicholas, Crystal, Cruz, and Shane Jaime, Amy Warsham, 39 1/2 great grandchildren; and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two spouses; a daughter, Josephina Jimenez; brother, Jose Luis Vargas; and grandson, Frankie Jaime.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 from 10-7pm with recitation of the rosary at 6 pm at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday Sept. 10, 2009 at 1pm at Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah. Burial will follow in the Zillah Cemetery.
