Red Ribbon Week begins today
Red Ribbon Week, a week of activities focusing on the prevention of substance abuse, is scheduled to begin today.
A memorial service for Jason Paul Storch, a 19-year-old who died in an alcohol-related wreck, is planned at 4 p.m. at Fayetteville Memorial Gardens Cemetery on U.S. 301 South.
Storch, who died after purchasing alcohol illegally at a Boone grocery store, was the son of Julius and Belinda Storch of Fayetteville. The couple sued the grocery store for failing to check their son's identification and won a precedent-setting case that allows parents to recover damages as a result of negligent sales of alcohol.
Sens. Tony Rand and Larry Shaw will join U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre and Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler for the service.
The official kickoff begins at 6 p.m. at the Crown Arena. The Fayetteville Patriots and the C.A.R.E.S. Coalition are sponsoring that event.
Mary Easley, wife of Gov. Mike Easley, will deliver opening remarks.
Several activities for children and their parents are planned, including basketball with the Patriots, games with Sgt. Slam and dancing with the Patriots' Hoop Troop.
The Fayetteville Police Department will use a simulator to demonstrate the effects of driving while impaired. Children and their parents can sign Sober Contracts to show their commitment to preventing substance abuse. Hot dogs and snacks will be available.
Residents are asked to show their support for substance abuse prevention. Thursday, motorists are asked to drive with their lights on. Friday, residents are asked to wear red to show support for substance- abuse prevention.
