A Letter from the Board President
"Necessity is the mother of invention" - Plato

Did you know that the most intense period of small business start-ups is typically during and after massive job losses and tough economic times? The reason for this follows the laws of cause and effect - when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

With less cash, more time and more anxiety in the markets, people tend to turn their hobbies into money making ventures. They get focused. Many of them start to look for resources like the Central Alabama Women’s Business Center.

The Central Alabama Women’s Business Center has been here through tough times. We were founded on tough times – in the tumultuous year of 2001, no less! Our classes, free one-on-one counseling, loan clinics, networking and leadership opportunities equip current and aspiring business owners with the information and resources they need to succeed. Birmingham needs a resource like our Center to enhance its future.

Consider this, women-owned businesses comprise the largest sector of business growth in Alabama and the rest of the United States. Women are considered the decision-makers for the majority of households in America. In addition, we see women playing an increasingly important role in the public policy and regulatory issues that impact our economy. Our Center helps women recognize their individual and collective strengths as well as their leadership capacity in this economy.

I remain convinced that necessity is the mother of invention. It is the inventiveness of Central Alabama’s women that will help to lift our economy out of its current quagmire
