Fifty one years ago, motorists traveling up old U.S. Highway 191 trough St. Anthony were invited to have free coffee and donuts at any of the local cafes. The date was June 3, the day before the opening of fishing season in 1955.
The St. Anthony Chamber of Commerce picked up the tab for that first-ever Free Fishermans's Breakfast.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge Street bridge since that beginning, all of it through Clyde Keefer Memorial Park where the breakfast has been held most of the years since then.
Today, visitors get a full breakfast of hot cakes with butter and syrup, sausage, hash browned potatoes, and beverages, still free.
By 6 a.m. Friday, all the preparations will be complete and a free breakfast will be ready and served until 2 p.m. for everyone who shows up for Free Fisherman's Breakfast.
According to legend, the breakfast started to show people what a pleasant, friendly town St. Anthony is and that it's the place to stop for supplies when heading into the popular fishing country of Fremont County.
Volunteers are the backbone of the Free Fisherman's Breakfast. It takes scores of people from cooks to servers and greeters, to pull it off. About 5,000 people are typically served.
