Area Rugs: Rugs can serve many practical purposes in your home. They can cover stains or worn carpet, add a splash of color to a room, reduce the noise level, and create a more open or more cozy atmosphere depending upon the rug's coloring. Textures and patterns can be very inviting but they can also be distracting. Don't let the rug's pattern compete with other furniture in the room. Many rug manufacturers create different sizes of rugs designed to coordinate with each other. Using rug pads can help reduce wear and tear on the flooring, as well as absorbing noise and making vacuuming easier.

Lighting: General lighting needs are usually served by overhanging and ceiling light fixtures. However, you may also use task lighting and ambient lighting to accent certain areas of your home. You can employ task lighting for a home office, using warm flourescent bulbs in a ceiling fixture. Make sure to place the light source behind a computer, or to the side. A desk lamp with a 3-way bulb will also work. For ambient or accent lighting a variety of choices is available. Some options include table or floor lamps, wall mounted fixtures and sconces, and chandeliers. In the bathroom, halogen lights are well suited at the top and side of a mirror, in addition to a ceiling light fixture.

Colors: When choosing a color scheme for a room or the entire home, keep in mind the color wheel-primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. Secondary colors come from equally mixing two of the primary colors together, to make green, violet, and orange. The tertiary colors come from mixing one primary color with larger amounts of another color, resulting in colors such as red-violet and yellow-green. Warm and cozy colors convey togetherness and strength, such as yellow and orange. Cooler colors like blue and green can provide a sense of soothing and peacefulness. When choosing colors for your home, use a color wheel and keep a consistent look throughout your home, especially in adjacent rooms.
