Energy-Efficient Homes
More and more homebuilders are leaning toward increasing energy-efficiency in their homes. Common reasons include a desire to build a home that does not compromise the environment or nature, and rising energy costs. Some features of energy-efficient homes are poured-concrete walls, radiant heat in inner walls and falls, and compact flourescent lighting. Obtaining some of these materials may be more difficult and can increase the overall cost to build a home by as much as 8%. However, having a reduced energy bill can make lenders more willing to loan more money for these kinds of homes knowing the borrower will have more disposable income.
Safe and Sound
Sometimes locks on our doors and windows can give us a false sense of security, that is, until a burglar breaks into our home. However, short of installing the latest laserbeam security system, there are easier ways of protecting your home. First, consider all the security risks your home presents, such as high shrubs or tall trees, being set back from the street, large uncovered windows in your home or garage, or trellises against the walls. You can lower the risk of break ins by adding motion sensor or timer lights in your yard, frosting garage windows, and installing an alarm system. While most alarm systems have monthly service charges, it may actually decrease your homeowner's insurance which can offset that cost.
To Move or not to Move
Before you accept that fantastic job offer that doubles your salary and moves you across the country, do some research on the area you will be moving into. Costs of housing and living expenses can change dramatically in different areas and that raise may not seem so great if your rent or mortgage doubles. Also, if security or safety is an issue, moving to another part of the country, and sometimes even within the same state may present greater crime risks. There are many online Web sites as well as your real estate agent that can give you more information on your new location.
