He was a great father, leading his boys on treasure hunts, leaving "reindeer tracks" in the yard on Christmas eve, and teaching them all about the world of nature around them. He taught them to work hard and play hard too. After graduating from college he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation until retiring. Reed was an amazing artist! He was gifted in watercolor as well as oil. He illustrated a children's coloring book on water conservation. He had his own art exhibit in Spanish Fork where he was honored as artist of the Month. Reed loved people. He could be giving without thought for himself. "The Rattler" as he was called loved restoring Model T Fords and other old cars and trucks from the time period. He was a true gentleman Cowboy with all that goes along with that. He could "spin a yarn" that would have his listeners in stitches... James served a mission in New Zealand; March 1963 thru March 1965. He was a member of US Army Reserve, served one year of active duty at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He worked at US West, on and off, for 30 years, retiring in 1999 as Director of Sales and Services. Each month, the UGA spotlights one of our devoted volunteers to express our deep appreciation for all they do and to help you, our loyal members, become well acquainted with them. The month of July features Jim Mitchell, a 17-year UGA Course Rating Team member Jim was born on February 19, 1941 in Provo, Utah. Growing up in Provo, Jim was a three-sport athlete at Brigham Young High School. He was a standout on the baseball, football, and wresting teams. While enjoying athletics, Jim was also the student body vice-president. Jim met his wife, Regina, through his best friend, who was also the student body president. Regina was his best friend’s younger sister. When Jim came back from his LDS mission, he began to work for Regina’s brother as a rancher. While working, Regina and Jim began a relationship that is still going strong to this day. After high school, Jim attended BYU for a short time before joining the U.S. Army Reserve. Following six months of training, Jim began working for Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company until his reserve unit was called to active duty. While Jim’s unit served overseas in Vietnam, he was not able to follow because his brother was also in his unit. Instead, the Army stationed Jim at Fort Leonard Wood for a year. When Jim’s service ended, he went back to working at Rocky Mountain Bell in its sales and services department for 30 years. When he retired in 1999, Jim was the director of sales and service for the state of Utah. After he retired, Jim was asked by Dennis Wood to volunteer to rate courses around Utah. During his time with the UGA, Jim has rated courses and also worked a handful of tournaments. Jim does not consider himself a golfer, but his two holes-in-one say otherwise. As a hobby, Jim also enjoys repairing and assembling golf clubs. The UGA is privileged to have volunteers like Jim who take time out of their busy lives to give back to the game of golf. These volunteers allow the UGA to fulfill its mission to promote interest in the game of golf by encouraging, organizing, supporting, sponsoring, and administering golfing activities and programs. James Edward Mitchell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully departed this world on February 6, 2024, at his home in North Salt Lake, Utah, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife Gina (Regina Redd), his children Brooke [Scott] Hyland, Chet [Charlotte] Mitchell, Megan [Greg] Nickel, and Sarah [Bj] Bisel, brothers Bill, Tom, and Mike, 15 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Veone, his brother Dave, and his son Zeke. Jim was born on February 19, 1941, in Provo, Utah, to James Maeser Mitchell and Mary Veone Hopkins. His formative years were spent in Provo, where he attended Brigham Young Elementary and Brigham Young High School. He spent the summer after high school graduation working with friends in Big Piney, Wyoming. While there he realized being a “Mormon” and the values it represented were what he wanted for his life, so he was baptized by one of his friends while still in Wyoming. Jim furthered his education at Brigham Young University before serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New Zealand South Mission. Upon returning from his mission, he enlisted in the Army Reserve. While waiting to be called up for training he worked for Gina’s brother Paul at Redd Ranches in La Sal, Utah. During that summer Jim and Gina fell in love at the base of the La Sal Mountains among hayfields and on long walks under star-filled skies. He then completed his basic training at Fort Ord, California and his Advanced Individual Training at the Presidio in San Francisco, California in the fall of 1966. After training he returned to Utah where he and Gina were married on October 20, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. He worked for Mountain Bell until his unit was called up in April 1968. His military service took him to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he welcomed the arrival of his first child, Brooke, in August 1968. He was granted early release from his military service in July 1969 to work on his wife’s family’s ranch where his second child, Chet, was born later that fall. Soon after Chet’s birth Jim returned to his career in the telecommunications industry. He and Gina established roots in Salt Lake City before building their dream home in Holladay, Utah. Their family continued to grow with the arrivals of Zeke (1971), Megan (1975), and Sarah (1977), each adding richness and love to their lives. Throughout the years, Jim and Gina created treasured memories at their second home in St. George, Utah, where they enjoyed their family gatherings, rest and relaxation. Retirement beckoned in 1999, affording Jim the freedom to pursue his passions, chief among them his enduring love for his family, golf, classic cars, and the fine arts. Jim had a love/hate relationship with golf. When the weather allowed, he played several times per week. He also vowed to quit golf several times a year. For many years he rated golf courses for the Utah Golf Association, allowing him to play virtually every golf course in Utah. He also enjoyed making golf clubs for his son, sons-in-law, grandsons-in-law, and friends. Affectionately known as Papa Jimbo by his grandkids, Jim embodied an understated warmth that defined his steadfast love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. His unwavering devotion, coupled with a dry sense of humor that left an enduring imprint on all who knew him, will be profoundly missed. We are so thankful for the plan of happiness and find comfort in the knowledge that we will be with him again. Harold “Scott” Morgan, 82, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, finished his mission here on earth surrounded by his loving family, in Orem, Utah, on January 22, 2024. Scott was born September 27, 1941, in Price, Utah, to Edward Evan Morgan and Edna Marcella Morgan. He is the youngest of 5 children. Scott spent most of his childhood in Sacramento, California. He moved to Provo, Utah during his high school years and attended Brigham Young High School, otherwise known as, B Y High. He had a great love for staying active. As a boy, he loved to box competitively. Later in high school and college he ran track. He was so proud to be a California state finalist in the 100-meter hurdle event. As his children, we loved hearing all about his sport stories. Scott served in the Army National Guard. Following military service, he chose to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission, later changed to the Texas Mission. While on his mission, he met his sweetheart, Terrie Lee Hendricks. They later met again while both going to Brigham Young University and fell in love. Scott and Terrie were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 1, 1965. They were blessed with 5 children and lived in Utah, California and then Utah again. They settled in Orem, Utah. He received a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from BYU, a school he loved so much. He passed that love of BYU along to his children. Scott, or better known by many, “Brother Morgan” was grateful for the opportunity to be employed as a Seminary teacher for The Church Educational System for many years. This brought him immense joy. He had such a love for teaching the gospel and was blessed to be able to have each one of his children in his class at some point. Scott had great faith in his Savior and a powerful testimony of The Book of Mormon, living Prophets and Apostles, and the Restoration of the Fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He lived his life in such a way that everyone that met him knew of his love for his Savior and his family. He dedicated his life to ministering and inviting others to come unto Christ. Scott is survived by his eternal sweetheart, Terrie Morgan, children; Kimberli (Roger) Brown, Jennifer (Keldon) Brown, David (Marci) Morgan, Brian (Holly) Morgan, Heather (Trevor) Smith, sisters; Myrleen Lyon, and Kay (Gaylan) Gallacher, 17 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. He was born May 24, 1941 in Nephi, Utah, a son of Howard Raymond and Glennes Lee Master Nelson. He married Cindy Stagaard on August 12, 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Throughout Wayne's life he had many great passions. He loved going fast in his race boats, and he loved golfing and the great outdoors. Some of my fondest memories are of my days at BYH. @2010 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Gary Truman Rose passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, as a result of complications from open-heart surgery. He was surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born in Provo, Utah on November 14, 1940 to his loving and hard-working parents, James Truman Rose and Faye Snow. He was raised in Provo. When Gary was only 7 years old, his father passed away, leaving his mother to support them. As a boy, he spent many hours (incredibly boring hours, as he later put it) helping in his mother’s home beauty salon. Sports became his salvation. Gary was an incredible athlete and loved baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, and football. Gary played baseball on Little League and Pony League All-Star teams as well as at Brigham Young High School in Provo. He was also a two-time state tennis singles champion in high school and played on scholarship for the tennis team at BYU. Gary’s love of golf began as a 10-year old when he was introduced to the game by an uncle at the Timpanogos Golf Club in Provo. Gary eagerly rode his bike 3 miles to the course, earning money to rent clubs to play by shagging balls and cleaning clubs. He was an avid and very talented golfer throughout his life, winning many club, church, and company tournaments in Southern California and Utah. He especially loved to play with his family and shared many memorable rounds of golf with them, gently correcting their shanks and slices. In golf as in all other things, Gary’s virtuosity served as an example to those he loved and who loved him. Gary graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1959. He then studied electrical engineering at BYU, and later took his first job at Boeing. Gary then began to work at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) on various power generation projects, also completing an MBA and a Master’s degree in electrical engineering during that time. Gary contributed his expertise and talents as an engineer on many generation and power transmission facilities throughout Southern California. In 1982, Gary returned to Utah as the Lead Electrical Engineer (and later, Project Manager) for the Intermountain Power Project near Delta, completing the project on time while saving tens of millions of dollars for the city of Los Angeles. Gary retired from the LADWP in 1996 after a career in public service of more than 30 years. He continued in engineering as a highly sought-after consultant in the power industry on projects in Southern California, Nevada, and Utah, receiving an award for 50 years of service in 2019. Gary met Laura Lopez while working at LADWP in Los Angeles. He knew he had found the love of his life. After a long courtship he was able to convince Laura that she had found hers, too. They married on November 6, 1982 and have enjoyed a wonderful and deeply caring relationship as soulmates. They have been loving companions to each other and are an example of true love and dedication in marriage. Gary and Laura traveled extensively over the years, visiting every continent. They were sometimes accompanied by family members throughout the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. They especially enjoyed summer trips to Oxford, England, in recent years, as well as regular visits to family in Utah. Gary is the beloved father to six children and—together with his wife, Laura Rose — they were the joy of his life. Gary shared his humor, his appreciation of music, art, literature, lifelong love of learning, and his joy in competition and sports with his family. Gary was a loving, active participant in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, and they constantly felt his support and encouragement in their success and happiness. He was a deep thinker and an avid reader and was well-informed about nearly any topic you could mention. He was a rare combination of intelligence, wit, humor, and wisdom, and he patiently shared his knowledge with those around him. Gary and Laura generously supported the education of their children, blessing their lives and the lives of their families. They also proudly supported the service of several children and grandchildren as missionaries. Their generosity extended to numerous charities and causes in their communities and around the world. Gary is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a testimony of God and faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This faith gives the assurance that this is not the end and that we will see each other again. Until that day, all who knew him will continue onward with cherished memories, valuable lessons, and deep abiding love. Gary’s love and influence will continue in the lives of those who knew him. Gary is survived by his wife, Laura Lopez Rose; children, Robert Rose (Julie), Christine Rose Remington, James Rose (Suzette), Adryne Cathlene Rose Boynton (Bryan), Gary Paul Rose (Traci), and Michael Rose; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She had a love of history and was an avid reader. She enjoyed a lifelong study of the scriptures and the gospel of Jesus Christ. She served faithfully in several church callings throughout her life. She devoted the last years of her life to the care of her elderly parents. She found joy in spending time with her eight grandchildren, and looked forward to their sleepovers. Her great love was her family and she will be deeply missed by them. She met David Shaw at the BY High School Reunion in 2009 at Carolyn Woodruff's home. Dave's wife had passed away earlier that year, in March of 2009, and Faye's husband about 9 years earlier. Faye and David started dating and were married on January 15, 2010. They had a remarkable marriage and were able to travel and be together to many areas such as North and South Carolina, Victoria British Columbia and the Oregon Coast. Dave had three daughters and 8 grandchildren and Faye had 4 daughters and 9 grandchildren, which kept them both busy in traveling to Boise, Idaho and Medford, Oregon as well as parts of Utah to visit their grandchildren. David was called as Bishop of their ward in October of 2015, just prior to his 74th birthday. They had a wonderful marriage together and found great joy in their later years. Unfortunately, due to a tragic accident in June of 2018, Faye fell down the stairs and broke her neck. She was laid to rest in the Orem City Cemetery in June of 2018. She lived a remarkable life and was a great joy to her children and her husbands. She is sorely missed. @2018

Utah man dies in Davis County crash

One man died and another was seriously injured in a Davis County crash Sunday morning. A 75-year-old man from Clearfield died Sunday after the car he was driving hydroplaned on Interstate 15 and was hit by a motor home. The crash occurred on northbound I-15 near milepost 329 at about 9 a.m., a press release from the Utah Highway Patrol said. The man, Stephen L. Stumph, was driving a silver Toyota Camry in the rain. There was standing water on the roadway, and, according to the news release, Stumph was traveling too fast for the weather conditions and lost control of the vehicle. His car sideswiped a Hyundai Elantra on the right, which then pushed the Camry back to the left directly into the path of a 37-foot motor home. According to the press release, the motor home struck the Camry "squarely" on the driver's door. Stumph died at the scene, and his male passenger was transported via helicopter to the University of Utah Hospital with serious injuries, the press release states. The occupants of the motor home were transported to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, and no one in the Elantra was injured. Everyone involved in the crash, caused by speed and weather conditions, was wearing a seat belt, the news release added. @May2016 ~ ~ ~ ~ HIS OBITUARY: Stephen Lynn Stumph, 1941–2016. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dear Husband, Father, Brother and Friend. Stephen passed away May 8, 2016 from injuries sustained in an auto accident while enjoying his convertible. He was born January 26, 1941 to Martha Lena Crews and Joseph Kitrell Stumph in Springville, Utah. He married the love of his life, Gayla Dee Williamson in the Manti Temple on June 21, 1961. He graduated from Brigham Young High School in the Class of 1959, and earned a degree in Physics from BYU, along with his Master’s Degree from Georgia Tech. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force during Vietnam, and pursued many avenues of scientific exploration as he advanced his civilian career. He had “retired” in 1995 and has been enjoying his semi-retirement working as a “Rocket Scientist” at Hill Air Force Base. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by His wife, Gayla; children, Laura (Dell) Nixon, Don (Kimberly), Sheri, Jacklyn, Gary (Miranda), and Tamara Stumph; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Barbara Binks, Fletcher Stumph and Craig (Lisa) Stumph. Class of 1959. Linda Tenney. Senior Chorus, Thespians, Hi-Steppers. BYU: Cougarettes and Cami Los social unit. Full name: Linda Tenney Turley-Hansen. ~ ~ ~ ~ In 1962, Linda married Tillman E. Turley. They have four children. In 1977, she returned to school at Arizona State University to major in TV Broadcasting. In 1979, she was hired at KPHO-TV in Phoenix (now the CBS affiliate) and soon became the prime-time co-anchor of the Nightly News. That position included co-hosting the local segments of the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethons for the next 20 years, in which she helped raise millions of dollars for the cause. Linda retired from broadcast anchoring in 1993. She is spending part of her retirement as a conservative columnist for the Arizona Republic and East Valley Tribunes among other publications. Linda is now married to David W. Hansen, PhD, from Reno, Nevada. They celebrated their 15 years anniversary in fall of 2009. Linda and David were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple in 2005. Combined, they are parents of seven children and 14 grandchildren. Linda and David now reside in Queen Creek, Arizona and spend their summers in Alpine, Arizona. Linda cherishes life and all it holds for those who are willing to take on the magnificent journey!
