Westwood/Romance Theatre

Restoration/Fundraising

The Westwood “Romance” Theatre is also one of the unique landmarks that Rexburg claims as its own. Opening its doors in 1917 the theatre went from showing silent films, to movies with sound, and now to holding such events as “Upper Valley Idol”. This beautiful theatre also needs restoration work. With this in mind, the Rexburg Arts Council has decided to work towards restoring this attraction back to its original magnificence.

Many shows and events are held each year that benefit the Rexburg Arts Council and the restoration of the Westwood Theatre. Come out and enjoy our wonderful entertainment while supporting these great causes.

History

The Westwood Theatre opened in 1917, as the Rex, showing silent films and hosting Vaudeville shows. In 1935, the Rex was remodeled and renamed the Romance and began showing movies with sound. In 1976, following extensive damage by the Teton Dam flood disaster, the theater was sold, again remodeled and renamed the Westwood. Carmike Cinemas bought the Westwood in 1998, and ran the movie house until it closed March 29, 2001. In 2005, the City of Rexburg purchased the Westwood. The theater has now been remodeled for community entertainment and events. Movies, plays, concerts, recitals, meetings, and parties are a few of the uses of this 420 seat theater.

Supported by the Rexburg Arts Council, the Westwood Committee was formed to create the mission and goals for the theater. The theme of the committee is to “Bring back the Romance”. One goal is to bring back the look and feel of the roaring 20’s. Student groups from the Construction Management and Interior Design Departments at BYU-I have already begun the planning and design for the building. Funding is needed to make this project a reality. You can contact Rexburg City Hall to make a donation. Donations can be financial, materials, or in-kind labor.
