The Bannock Humane Society is a non-profit organization funded by private donations plus fund raising by its members. There are no paid employees and all funds go to help the animals. The BHS receives no money from any Government agency and is not a part of the Pocatello Animal Shelter. The BHS does work closely with the shelter on many projects to benefit the animals.
The BHS constructed its home at 850 Barton Road in 2001 with donations from the community, help from its members, and assistance by the City of Pocatello (50 year property lease). The mailing address is P.O. Box 332, Pocatello, ID 83204. The BHS maintains a phone line at (208) 232-0371 for the following:
Mailbox 1: Foster information (Foster animals available for adoption or information on finding an animal a new home)
Mailbox 2: Requests for medical assistance (for sick or injured animals)
Mailbox 3: Other information (Lost or found animals, general information, information about spay & neuter programs)

The Bannock Humane Society, in cooperation with the local Pocatello veterinarians, coordinates volunteer time and donated funds to provide foster and healthy animal programs to the public. These programs promote spay/neuter for all companion animals.
Healthy Animal Program animals and Foster animals receive medical treatment as follows: Spay or neuter surgery at local Pocatello vet clinics Dogs – 1st year Rabies and Distemper/Parvovirus vaccines Cats – 1st year Rabies and Distemper/Upper Respiratory vaccines, test for feline leukemia and AIDS
Current programs are: • Adoption of animals in our foster care program. Cats are adoptable for $65 and dogs are adoptable for $85. These fees cover the medical services shown above. • The public may go through the BHS Healthy Animal Program with their companion animals and receive the medical services shown above. • Pets for the Elderly allows anyone 60 years or older to adopt a foster animal or go through the Healthy Animal Program for $35. BHS is reimbursed from the Pets for the Elderly Foundation for the balance of the adoption fee.
Program can be started Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 8pm at BHS building. We request people come in to do paperwork without their animals and then begin vaccinations the following week. This will help lower the stress of the animals by keeping our shot clinics shorter. For Pets for the Elderly, please bring your animal to do paperwork so can get a picture and then return the following week for shots.

We hold adoption days the 2nd Saturday of the month (see our schedule page) in our building from 12 - 4 pm. Pets are brought to Adoption Day so you can meet the dogs and cats that are looking for a loving new home. You will have a chance to talk with the foster parents to find out more about the pets. We also have information available on animal issues, and volunteers who can help with general animal behavior questions.

ANIMAL ABUSE OR INVESTIGATION: Due to lack of volunteers, BHS has had to start referring all county related abuse/neglect or investigations calls to the Bannock County Sheriff's Office. Any abuse/neglect or stray/injured animals calls for problems within Pocatello city limits will be referred to Pocatello Animal Control. Any abuse/neglect or stray/injured animals calls for problems within Chubbuck city limits will be referred to Chubbuck Animal Control.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE: Medical assistance for animal illness or injury is available on a limited basis.
EDUCATION: Education including speakers for groups, handouts for children, classes about responsible pet guardianship, need and reasons for spay or neuter of all companion animals, and the link between violence towards animals and violence towards people.
FOSTER PROGRAM & REHOMING ANIMALS: Foster program for homeless animals. BHS does not keep any animals at our building. All our animals are kept in foster homes.
BHS makes every effort to find foster care for homeless and stray animals. We also try to help take in animals needing training or other assistance from the shelter. Volunteers are always needed to help with this need.
We work with people who are looking for a new home for their animal by asking them to be a temporary foster home, they keep the animal and work with us to find a home. We also work in this same capacity with people who have litters of puppies and kittens for adoption. We require the mother to be spayed for these litters to be supported.
Any of our foster animals can be shown at the monthly Adoption Day and are available for adoption between the monthly events via phone calls or email.
SHOT CLINIC: Shot clinic for foster animals and healthy pet campaign animals ONLY is every Wednesday night from 7pm - 8pm at the BHS building. BHS does not offer booster shots or shots to animals without spay & neuter services.
FOOD DISTRIBUTION: Food distribution of donated pet food to those in need, as it is available. We require animals getting assistance to be spayed & neutered. People may make donations of pet food and those in need may pick up pet food on Wednesday nights between 7 - 8pm. Wal Mart, Petco, the Idaho Food Bank and the public have kindly donated pet food for this program. Food is limited and we reserve the right to limit quantities based on need.

SUMMER PET FAIR: Typically in June, we have a major fundraiser. Events include a raffle, food sales, and of course pets for adoption. Clergy from several local churches come and offer a blessing for all the homeless animals. We also encourage you to bring your pet to be blessed.
Our garage sale has not been as successful in recent years, so we are no longer going to do the garage sale in June. We are looking for new and exciting ideas for the June fundraiser. We would love to hear your ideas or have you volunteer to chair a committee to help with this event in 2010!!
CHRISTMAS FOR THE ANIMALS: You can have a picture of you and your pet taken with Santa. And of course, the pets that are available for adoption will be there too! We typically have a raffle, bake sale and crafts to help with your Christmas shopping.
SPAY DAY USA: BHS supports Spay Day in February each year with various programs as donations allow. We have offered discount certificates for spay/neuter with the money from our red dog houses that you may have seen around town. Please put your change in one of these houses to help support our spay/neuter program.
