Preparing Photos for the Web

Part 5 - Conclusion
In this lesson you have learned about the importance of photographs on your web site. We then discussed how to focus on the more important part of the photo, what dimensions it should be, and finally how to compress the photo so that it will load quickly. By following these principles you can add color and interest to your web site. If you are selling products, well prepared pictures will be critical to convey the information to the customer to make a good decision. Presentation of the product is more than half the sale.
Once you have mastered these basic principles, you can do even more. You can turn photos into navigational buttons on your site. You can create a collage of a variety of photos. You can add a drop shadow like the picture to the left. You can even create subtle backgrounds images like you see on this page that are so compressed that they add very little the download time even though the dimensions are big. You can fix up a bad photo to be acceptable. You can add text to pictures. You can merge photos with other graphics. This can become a lot of fun.
