Log Home Restoration - Log Repair
Handcrafted Colorado Lodge Pole Pine.
The log repair required during this restoration stemmed from lack of Maintenance. Below you can see these garage wall logs needed to be refaced. Several common errors were made that led to the log rot you see.

  • Inadequate overhangs. When designing your home plan for at least 24" overhangs or covered porches.
  • Moisture sealed into the logs. An oil-based stain was applied when the moisture content was too high. The film-forming stain sealed the moisture into the logs allowing mold and mildew to grow and rot from within.
  • Lack of Maintenance. When we began working on this home no maintenance had been done for over 10 years.

  • Above This log end was replaced due to rot from lack of maintenance. As you can see it is not always necessary to replace the entire log. Many times replacing just the log end is all it takes to remove the problem and protect the rest of the log.

Below These pillars were replaced due to extensive rot. The ends were not sealed properly which allowed moisture to absorb into the ends from the top and bottom rotting the pillars from the inside out.

When planning the design of your home overhangs (24" or greater) or covered porches offer much greater protection. Gutters are a must for protection of the logs and finish as well. Vertical logs need to be sealed well on tops and bottoms to prevent moisture from entering rough sawn edges.
