Creating Password Protected Folders
Introduction

The purpose of this course is to teach you how to create web pages that can only be seen by someone who knows the user name and password.  For most web sites, you are trying to get as many people as possible to visit your web pages.  However, there are times when it would be desirable restrict access to some pages on your web site.  So examples would be:

  • If you are selling an online newsletter or other intellectual property on your web site and you only want those who have paid the appropriate fees to be able to see the pages.
  • If your web site has a directory of people or business containing personal data, you may not want everyone to be able to have access to this information.
  • If you are selling products to both  retail and a wholesale customers and would like to protect the wholesale prices, you could have a duplicate web site for your wholesale customers that would be password protected.

This course will teach you how to protect selected pages from the causal viewer by setting up password protected directories.  This would be one of several steps you may need to accomplish your goal.  In the rest of this course you will learn the following:

  • How to create users with passwords,
  • How to protect folders that contain the pages you would like to protect,
  • How to give users permissions to view pages in the protected folds.
