Layout Manager

Cautions
Deleting Blocks

Deleting a layout manager block is a little different from most blocks. If you're not careful you might delete more than you want to. When you click on the delete icon for the layout manager you want to remove you will be presented with three options: delete blocks, layout only, and cancel. "Delete blocks" will remove the layout manager and all blocks inside of it. "Layout only" will delete the layout manager block only, but leave the blocks in their place (although they might be oriented differently after the layout is removed). Cancel, of course, will delete nothing. When prompted with these options, make sure you take the time to pause and think about what you're doing before you make any mistakes.

Form Builder Blocks

Layout manager blocks should not be used inside of form builder blocks. If you do, you may have trouble with your form.  The results of doing this are unpredictable.  For example, when deleting layout manager blocks that are contained inside of form builder blocks, it is impossible to delete the layout only. Deleting the layout manager block will also delete the blocks inside of it, even if you choose "layout only" when prompted.

Too Much Nesting

Too much of a good thing is very bad. While layout manager is a good tool, it should not be overused. Some people go to great trouble trying to create the layout they want and end up with dozens of layout manager blocks, when they could accomplish the same thing with two or three. When this happens they end up with block identification numbers that are unnecessarily long and confusing, like this one: 1.4.12.6.2.3.4.1.7. You should be careful not to overdo it. When you're done, take a look at your page and see if you can find any layout manager blocks that are unnecessary. If you find any, remove them.  You rarely need to nest layout managers more than 3 deep.
